Yesterday while at the shop at the garbage tip, I picked up the handpiece of a CIG comet 3, and a Murex 200 cutting torch with hoses and regulators for $20 all upThe regulators look pretty beat up (cig regulators), the guages are milky and screwed and the hoses are stuffed as well, but I was wondering if its worth putting a kit together piece by piece?I guess this is one for the other aussies, but does anyone know if its worth or possible to have the regulators and torches rebuilt? the regulators look pretty bad, well the guages on them would need to be replaced and the o ring on the bottom is stuffed too.The Comet 3 seems to be pretty popular, so i guess parts shouldn't be a major issue. As they came from the tip, i'm a little cautious with their state, but the look ok condition. I'm not sure if its worth bothering with, by the time i get everything I need, i'll probably be better off just buying a complete new set. I was just wondering peoples experience and opinion on the matter.I would be probably using the torches with oxy LPG for the occasional cutting and heating and brazing. Its more useful to have a bottle of lpg around then a bottle of acetylene, plus it means only one bottle rental (and maybe a bit safer too?)cheers, matt Attached Images
Reply:Ring CIG in Preston, Victoria and find out who their authorized repairer in your area, send 'em in and get a quote.  You might be surprised.I wouldn't try them without having them checked over first.Had a regulator repaired a while ago and if i remember right, it was only about 40 odd bucks.
Reply:I would NOT run a questionable oxy regulator without having it checked out first. My name's not Jim....
Reply:cheers LarryO, I'll have to try that. if they were salvagable for less than new regulators that would be fantastic.Yea Boostinjdm, there is no way I'd put those regs on a gas bottle. the o-rings on the bottom of them are screwed, and who knows what else can't be seen.what should I look at in regards to the torches? the murex looks like it needs a cutting nossle and its good to go. i guess the main thing would be leaks in the taps and such?the comet seems to need the mixer & nossle for heating I'm not really concerned if these are junk for my investment, safety is the most important thing i think
Reply:Once again, ask CIG repairer.  Murex is distributed by CIG so they sould know something about it.Looking at it again, the Murex only needs a cutting tip which im sure would take standard Comet tips.  Cutting only. The Comet would be interchangable between cuting and welding.  You need the top sections and a selection of welding tips.Last edited by LarryO; 01-14-2012 at 04:00 PM.
Reply:I was just talking to the guy at cigweld and he mentioned that gas bottle pressures have increased, in oxy in particular in the past few years, and basically recommended me get a new set as I don't really know how old these ones are, and what pressure they were built for, that plus the fact he said there were no cig repairers in canberra, which would mean i'd have to ship everything means I think the regulators go in the too hard / no good basket, and I'll get new ones. Seemings I'm planning on using LPG not acetylene, it makes sense for me to get a new LPG regulator anyway.I forgot to ask about the murex torch, but i'll look into that more when I get closer to being able to use the torches
