So a friend of mine asked me to build him a rectangular bbq pit that mounted on a hitch. So I thought  I would share with you on what I came up with...  Feel free to comment/ ask questions. Beginner at welding/ its just a new hobby of mine. Attached Images
Reply:That's a pretty decent looking tailgate grill you made there, especially considering you are a beginner at this. The grease fittings on the swing arm may be a bit of overkill though unless he is constantly moving it around while cooking. What do you use to regulate the incomming air and exhaust stack? Where is the exhaust stack? Now go make one for yourself and it will be better than this one. That's the way things work for me anyway. The first one may be pretty good, but the next and subsequent ones turn out better each time, till I get the design down pat. After using it some you may find areas that could use some improvement or tweeking to make it a little better. Give it a few good test runs(let him buy the meat and charcoal) and see what else you may need to do to it. But it may do just fine right off the bat.
Reply:That should work good, nice first project. Whats for supper??

Reply:I just have one quick question for y'all.  Is the grill close enough or hot enough to hurt the paint on the tailgate or anywhere else on the truck?  It does look quite nice.  Thanks for sharing it with us.Miller BobcatHarris cutting outfitMiller spectrum 625 plasmaVariety of shopmade tools
Reply:Nice job. I especially like the use of the latch pin. I'm not 100% sure about the lid stop. Nice idea, but I'm wondering if someone is going to get caught on it when the lid is closed. I think there might have been a better way to make something work for that. Possibly a block or two attached to the back of the grill vs using that tab. Needs more thought for your next one.Your welds definitely need some work, but for a first project they are pretty good. Practice, practice, practice... Post up some picts of some practice welds, as well as the pertinent info like material thickness and machine and settings, and we will help you improve. My guess from what little I can see is that you are probably moving to fast. a fairly common newbie mistake..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Originally Posted by MaperezzThanks for the insight DSW yea this is actually my fifth BBQ pit I've attempted, and still very much a newbie. I only started welding after my grandfather gave me all his equipment. As for the  materials I used for this pit was 6011 1/8 electrodes at 105 amp I usually just do circle patterns. The thickness of my metal was 3/16. Could you possibly show me a photo of a perfect 6011 electrode bead so I can have an idea.

Reply:the trick to 6010/11 is PUSH. fill until is starts to quiet down. also quit doing patterns , practice your puddle control. watch the width of your puddle and match your travel to it
Reply:Might as well take lots of beer along cause you won't be going anywhere till that grill cools down.My name's not Jim....
