Hi I was curious about doing a 3g/4g position weld test on 1/2 in steel with ceramic backing. I have no problem with the thickness of the metal or the positions but have never worked with ceramic backing. This is for a job test I am looking to do but am trying to get some info on this first. Its also with pulse MIG as well which doesnt bother me, just the ceramic part.thx
Reply:Concentrate on tyeing the metal together don't really linger on the backing.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:are you supposed to tie the metal with the backing or not?
Reply:Well, you're not going to be able to tie the metal in with ceramic backing now, are you? The ceramic backing is there as an 'inert' backing that won't really affect the weld (other than maybe shaping the backside bead profile and keeping the backside of the bead from dripping/falling out). Keeps you from having to go and back-gouge on a full-pen weld.Don't direct the wire/arc at the backing tape, start at one side of the bevel and get a puddle going and let the puddle fill the gap and the tape. You'll probably have to make several passes to fill the bevel (don't try and fill it all in just one pass, that's a LOT of fill). The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:ya i understand how to fill in the bevel already, I just have never dealt with ceramic backing and am trying to find out what to do when welding with it!
Reply:You guys need to post pictures of ceramic tape welding. My current fleet of boats was built using it and I have seen the aftermath after it has been sand blasted and 6 layers of paint have been applied. I want to see the process, though.
Reply:Dunno where to score small quantities, but the MIG students we had liked it when preparing for their tests.A source would be handy for the folks who post asking about it now and then. |
