Today I finished two chimney caps for my roof:It all started with copper 110 sheet, 24g (16oz), also known as roofing copper:The long side of the large cap was 40", so I had to bend it differently because my simple bender is only 30".The mesh was welded on the corner of a square steel tube.Small cap finished! The welds were not very good. It was very difficult to handle; first the puddle won't start and on some occasions, a burned a hole.I used a 1.6mm 2% lanthanated tungsten and about 30Amps for the mesh and 60Amps for the corners.Copper 110 is not oxygen free and known to be difficult to weld, but I tried it anyway.
Reply:That's one mighty fine job done.  I love the first picture with the woods in the backdrop.  Best thing about copper caps is the patina progression over time.  It already looks fantastic new, but with a little weathered look, it'll add a nice contrast. Here's one of my latest chimney caps I just added.  It took a while to work around the stone, but we got it up and running:  http://www.patriotmw.com/individual-...fireplace-topsHow long did your project take, if you don't mind me asking?Patriot Metal Works
Reply:This is a very simple design and I ordered the sheet sizes accordingly to minimize the cuts. The cutting and bending was maybe an hour or so. Most of the time of course was spend doing the spot welds. I had it in about 2 days done including installation, but it is difficult to compare this to your business doing copper roofs/caps. I cut the sheets with a scissor and bended with a $40 brake and some wood while you put the parts into a real brake/shear and done with I think rivets are used in professional products anyway. Welding is time consuming and adds to the cost, but it was fun for me even if it had taken 2 weeks.
Reply:Those look really great!Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Nice Work!! Looks like a good job to me. How do you like your everlast? what size is it? Thanx
