Hey everyone, so I was wondering if anyone on this forum has went to Hobart Welding Institute? Reason I am asking is cause I am looking to start there in the summer, I am currently a student at the University of Cincinnati but figuring it out that college and textbooks really isn't for me.But anyway, if you attended there, what was it like? How were the classes and people/instructors? Thank you

Reply:I went through the combined Pipe and Structural Program at HIWT.  Classes are 8 to 3:45 M-F, with 1 hour for lunch.  Most are 2 weeks long, but a couple are 1 week.  The TIG/Stick combo course is 4 weeks long.  Classroom time is 30-45 minutes each day; with videos and instructor lecture covering whatever you're working on that day.  The other 5.5 to 6 hours is under the hood welding. The instructors I had were great guys, who would really work with you if you were trying to learn.  the school provides all equipment, fillermetal , pipe and plate for practice; much of it is pre-beveled to you don't spend as much time prepping material.  You bring basic tools, hood, safety gear, and a good attitude every day. You'll take at least 1 welding test every week that you must pass.  Some weeks are two tests; which can be a little hectic depending on how easy welding comes to you.The school isn't cheap; but you can get federal financial aid student loans to help out.  Some guys worked nights/days while going to school.  That makes for some looonnggg days, but it's possible. You'll come out of the program with a solid set of BASIC welding skills on pipe and plate.  There's still a lot to learn about working as a welder; but most companies are savy to this and will give you on the job training.  The school has a good reputation with employers and most students find jobs after graduation; at least my group of students did years ago.  Pay ranges from $15 to $30 dollars an hour; wiht more pay going to guys who travel and do the most unpleasant work; generally speaking. If there's anything else you want to know, just ask.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
