Reply:All that, and no backpurge.Hmmm............... Yes, it will work. But those kinds of weld on SS need to be backpurged, or have solar flux on the inner seams. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:1. NO GLOVES2. No back purge 3. end craters4. cup too small5. welding positioner is cheating 6. the attempt to use filler was funny.I have seen one in a bike shop, the weld speed was so high and wrong pulse/amp settings the whole thing was welded with tiny holes(unfused segments) every mm or so--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:He's not really that steady, he's just braced off.Do guys like that think that welding with no gloves makes them look more experienced or something?  I welded for 60+ hours last week without a single burn, I'd like to keep it that way..Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.

Reply:Everyone is worried about burns, I'd bet he is at 35 amps Max. Big difference from mig welding at 200+ amps. I think the video shows highly specialized work that most here that seem so quick to be critical of couldn't begin to do. This isn't food grade work and I'd say due to perfect fit up there is minimal sugaring. I come from a code x-ray shop so I'd be wanting to purge but in this application is isn't completely necessary. Nice work.

Reply:If anyone beleives folks are just "Nit-Picking" about no protection from UV and IR dangers ...then do the same thing with no type of eye protection, just buy a pair of cheap sunglasses that has no UV or IR protection factors and weld away!..let us know how the outcome is later..............Bottom line is,even at that low of an amperage the UV and IR exposure dangers are still there, especaily doing it day after dayLincoln Ranger 8 225Lincoln 180 ProMigMiller Maxstar 200DXInternational Ironworkers Local 70930+ years and counting

Reply:It is SS or Ti. Most of the SS exhausts have the discoloration polished off, and most Ti exhausts do not, if that makes identification easier.Wouldn't Ti welding require back shielding?JoeLast edited by scudzuki; 02-04-2012 at 03:08 PM.Miller Syncrowave 200Mac/Miller MW130 MIGKalamazoo bandsawCincinnati Arrow 500 VMCColchester Dominion 15 x 36 lathe with 2 axis DRO

Reply:I always, ALWAYS wear protection, even if iam tacking ill throw a set of those welding "sleeves" on i just laugh at anyone who welds without any sort of arm/hand protection. It dosent make you cooler, nor more manly. Maybe you strive to be like paul junior on orange county choppers?  YES you ARE baking your skin, your basically exposing your hands to the surface of the sun. I have a family member who is a dermatologist, she said a welder exposing parts of their skin to that light intensity for an 8 hr peroid (lets say a week of welding?) is the same as someone laying out in the sun with no sun screen for 3 hrs a day for a whole year.... and she said skin cancer is a very real possibility, and is a very serious cancer.... i think ill believe her and continue to protect myself in anyway possible.

Reply:Belive me it's not Ti. I've been on akrapovic factory tour and welding titanium is a little bit complicated. Also their welds have no discoloration, because only that is aceptable.

Reply:yes, i weld.  passed my first cert in 1976 at general dynamics shipyard.  E8018 C3.i have been making a living at it  since then.  and you?   do you have a relative that is a dermatologist?   if i am welding mig i rarely use a right handed glove.   sometimes while foraging around in my work truck i find three or four right handed gloves before i find a  left. does that ever happen to you?   i've been sunburned beneath my chin too.   whoa, i'm still here.   do i go out of my way to let  that happen. no, i don't.   please show me the welder's that have developed skin cancer on the tops of their hands from welding.   i want to see a definitive study and not the one by the dixon/dixon's that shows the same welder in both studies.  christ, he could  have been a fisherman.  (they are more likely to develop skin cancer from unprotected  exposure to uv rays.  you see it with some frequency down here)frankly it's guys like you that buy into every new horror story that give a few laughs to people like myself.   uv's,  radioactive tungsten, smoke, welding on galvanized.   you need to be working in a clean room.     "I've welded all day!", that's funny. wow hope you made a speedy recovery from that neck burn.   don't worry, you can still have children.i'll bet if i look around the net there are probably vendors selling left handed gloves only;  lolLast edited by fdcmiami; 02-09-2012 at 09:21 PM.

And wouldn't you just keep things consistent and either do filler on it all or filler on none of it? Just seems odd that only 2 welds were done with filler.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:Since it looks like it came out better than perfectly fine for what it is, I wouldn't have backpurged it either unless there was a sugaring problem. Whenever I have to backpurge something it it almost doubles the time. Let the results speak for themselves, if it's necessary do it, if it's not you're just wasting time and money.Last edited by MikeGyver; 02-11-2012 at 06:23 PM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
