G'day Folks,I'm still teaching myself to weld: Whilst practicing today I saw something I hadn't seen before - so I took a picture. Perhaps one of you guys can tell me what the %^*(* happened?I was welding along quite happily when the spark kind of went crazy - loads of flames and smoke. I persisted for a maybe a second and then slowly pulled the electrode from the work piece which I guess formed the slag on the end of the electrode. As you can see a whole iceberg slice of flux had fallen off of the side of the electrode.Could this be due to dampness? Reply:Moisture is my guess.
Reply:The flux could have been cracked already
Reply:Saw it in welding class... several electodes of 3/32 6011 had fine cracks in the flux coating. Maybe they got too rough handling in the new box? Anyway, when trying to weld with these cracked electodes, the arc would be fine then suddently blow out the side...??? Flux would fall off - like yours.Check your electrode coatings for fine cracks.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:So toss it and grab another. Keep welding. Sh*t happens. Yeah, probably poor handling.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks for the replies folks - so poor handling rather than dampness seems to be the problem.
Reply:That actually happens ALOT, sometimes it's due to poor handling, sometimes it's poor quality electrodes, sometimes moisture, no big deal just grab another one and get on with it.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:I hate it when you shell out the cash for some rod and you end up with s*** like this. II have found that atom arc acclaim and atom arc 7018 has done this to me the least out of any other rod i've bought before.Aaron Olsonmiller dynasty 200dx |
