I am looking for my first ac/dc welder and found this on Craigslist. Any advice would be helpful.https://austin.craigslist.org/tls/4376777601.htmlthanks guys
Reply:Not a bad machine. That is an older Thunderbolt with the crank on top and I have had both the AC and AC/DC models. Probably works fine and will for a long, long time, but around here it would bring $200-$300 tops.If you can buy for around $250, and you try it out, then I would feel like a fair deal.I have seen many of the new model Thunderbolt for less than $400.Make him an offer, but be prepared to pay when he accepts.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:I have a newer model w/ polarity and A/C selector and it is a great little buzz box. Agreed if you can get it for $250 it will be a great buy. I got mine for $150 at my LWS as they'd taken several in for trade from a high school metal arts shop. As said make sure the A/C and D/C both work well.                                                      MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:thanks for the advice guys. would it be fair to ask him to demo his product. I have never really done any buying on craigslist and dont expect a warranty.
Reply:Definitely demo it.  If he doesn't want you to then offer him $50. LOLI wouldn't pay more than $300 for it because a new one from Miller is just over $700.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:the serial number is in the second picture and the manual that pulls up says 1993. still waiting on him to reply. he did drop the price yesterday to $350.
Reply:Looks in good shape and says it comes with leads.  He mentions being able to weld out to 125 feet.  If the leads are anywhere close to that long, then $350 is worth it.  Of course, you may not NEED them that long but at $1 - 1.50 / foot, that's a lot of copper. Here's another that's been up for a while for $225 but a bit farther drive  http://austin.craigslist.org/tls/4363370098.htmlAlso, this is (I think) a Lincoln ac/dc crackerbox that might be worth checking out.  http://austin.craigslist.org/tls/4362535272.htmlI'm in Austin if you are unsure and want a second eyeball on it I could probably find time.

Reply:I'm a giver It's fun to go kick tires with folks and The Lord knows the assistance and help folks give of themselves every day here that I pick up as a lowly Bed Frame Welder (TM)
Reply:I hope that little welder doesn't have leads that are 125 feet long, I would rather have the power cord that long and not the leads. If it does have 125 foot leads that are in good condition they are probably worth over a hundred dollars.

Reply:Originally Posted by leoflores67I was comparing that one to the newer version. the manual for the older one gives you the different gauge leads for the distances and welding amps. The newer one does not. Does that mean you are stuck with the lead lengths that it comes with.

Reply:Originally Posted by RodJYou can add or shorten the leads - just like splicing or cutting wire.  There's advantage and disadvantage to long leads vs. long power cord, especially if you don't want to drag the entire welder and cart half way across God's earth...  You'll need a 220 outlet, btw, for that welder but a 220 dryer outlet will work if you have one in the garage.I'll shoot you a PM with my email and cell if you get a hold of the seller and want a ride along.Hasta luego.

Reply:Mahogany?  Sure you can tig ANYTHING with the right gas as long as you clean your wood.  I did not just say that...
