Im attempting to make these ornamental motorcycles. But trying to figure out what they use to weld these. I think its a tig. Which is why I bought one to make them with the tig but now not sure if its right. My other question is  how to weld thin sheet metal. What amps should I use? Ive been trying to weld some thin sheet metal to steel bolts but it seems that the amps are to low to melt a puddle on the bolt or to high and burns the thin sheet metal. So whats the best way to do this?. I have 3/32 filler rod for this but its to big. Im going to order some 1/16 steel rod for it.I also just ordered some stainless bolts and nuts for my projects and stainless filler rod 1/16. Its the 308L. Any tips I should know of before welding stainless?Last edited by irishluck; 03-19-2014 at 02:14 PM.
Reply:I weld up about 10 motorcycles a year for presents at Christmas time to give my friends kids. I've done 100 or so. I use sil bronze most of the time. Mostly because I don't have a mess with the zink coating on the nuts and bolts poping off and ruining the tungsten. In your case it will be a huge help as it will not melt the parent metals but instead braze them together. It's not quite as strong but if your after something like the picture you posted, it will be more then strong enough. KB.
Reply:Most of that don't need any filler at all....TIG is a wonderful thing.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I agree that most of what is in the picture doesn't need filler as well but most nuts and bolts from a hardware store are zink coated.
Reply:Well I have alot of stainless bolts and nuts and just got my 1/16 stainless filler rod so couldn't I just do that?Idk how to braze at all. Most of the stuff I have TIG welded on the bike Im making is working fine, its just the washers that dont weld good. They burn before anything.
Reply:Grind the coating off the washer as best you can before welding. Not just the top and bottom surfaces...The outside diameter and the inside of the hole.Use a round file in the hole....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Or soak in muratic acid for a bit.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I hate using acid but that's me. Grinding works too but it's slow going on each part. If you have a blast cabinet you can use that but you will lose the finish on the hardware. Blasting it will give it a satin finish you may not want. It can be done with a tig. The more experience you have the easier it will get.
