Latest little project to help my granddaughters life a little easier when working on her ponies feet,I made two, heavier one to be kept at the stables and another lighter model for taking in the horse trailer to save weight, Please let me know what you think, and any possible improvements that are needed,I know quite a few of our members are horse people and look forward to their comments. Reply:Those look stronger than some of the homemade jack stands I've seen in the past.Do I spy a bicycle seat tube/clamp and a handle off a mini vise?  You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Those are great.Very good design and well constructed. Especially like the one with leg to leg brace at the bottom...good to keep boot on to hold steady. The others I think might be a little more difficult with the extended foot to hold steady. And I'd want all 3 legs to have the extensions so wouldn't have to make sure stand was in right rotation each time.As you use them might find places for rubber padding/grip. Rubber pipe insulation works.I'll volunteer as a field tester if you want to send me a couple of them....AlA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:I'd be afraid to use a clamp-type support with my horses. I'd need to drill through and pin the stand in place. But then again, my horses are all old and unsteady standing on three legs. Reply:7A749,  No not a farrier, just a retired turbine engineer trying to make life a bit easier for some of the family members. The bigger stand now has a rubber liner to the cradle attachment, and yes the smaller of the two is adjusted with a bicycle seat post clamp,I was going to pin it as well but don't really think it's necessary as those clamps will take quite a lot of weight,Once set on the bikes they never seem to slip regardless of weight of the rider,Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.

Reply:Very nice. I was gonna ask to see the pony but you did even better with the action shot.
Reply:I've probably made 50 or more through the years as I have a lot of horse customers. I have also made a lot of stocks, breeding dummies and horse stalls as well. I've made the hoof stands several different ways. The cheapest is just bending 2 pieces of 3/4" rod at 60 degrees and welding them together to form a 3 legged stand with a vertical leg up. No matter how you set it, you will have 3 legs down and one up. You put the cradle on one end and the pad on a different end. Turm it one way for the pad and the cradle is on the ground. Turn it with the cradle up and the pad will be on the ground. The one people like the best is made out of a cheap jack stand with the folding legs. It's adjustable for height where the other isn't but best is that it folds up for storage in the trailer.
Reply:Nice work Gordon, I dont know much about horse maintaince but I bet your grandkids are happy. Its great you are helping them out!!
Reply:Bob, thank you for your stand making information, I would be very interested to see a couple of photo's or maybe even a sketch, I made mine adjustable because at the time didn't have a specific height to work to, the stands I have seen on the internet seem to be from 14"-22". what do you think is a good general height,Your design with the foot rest and cradle on different legs sound great.Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.
