I have an Acetylene regulator that I have always used. It says CGA 510 on it. Well, I need to go mobile and I don't want my giant tank in my truck. I have a real small cylinder that HVAC guys use. My regulator obviously won't fit. I started searching online for adapters. This lead me to wonder what the heck a POL is or a CGA 510 POL? What does POL mean?\And I still don't know what the thread/fitting is on this little cylinder. I can take a picture and post if needed.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:POL is Prest-O-Lite, the old Union Carbide. CGA 510 is POL.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:The vale on the "small" cylinder is probably either a CGA 200 valve if your cylinder is an "MC" 10 cf clinder, or a CGA 520 if it is a "B" size 40 cf cylinder. Standard actylene cylinders most regs are set up for are CGA 510, note it is the only CGA acetylene valve with a female on the cylinder so it's easy to spot.. Usually you can find the CGA number clearly marked right on the valve itself on the cylinder if there is any question about size. Here's a PDF that will show the 2 valves.http://www.harrisonvalve.com/uploads/product/47/pdf.pdfAdapters that will switch from one size to another.  http://www.tinmantech.com/html/weldi...r_adapters.phpYou will find there is one other CGA valve for actylene, the CGA 300. That is for large commercial acetylene cylinders. It has a male thread on the cylinder as opposed to the CGA 510 valve,.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Or it means "Put On Left". http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/POLJoker11, there are double female adapters for this. You need Western Enterprises CGA-300 to CGA-510  Part# 61 Commercial Acetylene Cylinder to POL Acetylene Regulator.Betty Mills has them - http://www.bettymills.com/shop/produ...referer=searchBut, for the little performance you'll get from that small acetylene cylinder, I would go with a BBQ propane cylinder."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Stickman, I think you have it backwards. The CGA 300 is for a LARGE cylinder. I believe he either needs to go down to the CGA 510 on a "B" size or a CGA 200 on an "MC" size cylinder with the CGA 510 regulators he already has..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:DSW is correct, the 300 is a "large-ish" cylinder. The largest are 510.Link to Stoody page. Find your fitting among the top photos, select adapter to suit:http://www.stoodyind.com/Catalogs/FI...05catpg049.pdf

Reply:CGA 300 is "commercial acetylene"(male threads on the tank), POL is usually fuel gas, propane, acetylene, MAPP, etc.... A "B" tank has a "B" fitting that is different than a CGA 300, and an "MC" tank is different than the others. I fired acetylene years ago now everything no matter if it is MAPP, propane, propylene, fuel gas, or what ever all has a POL,CGA 510 fitting.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I thought it was a designation used to identify mil spec items as Petroleum, Oils, and lubricants.  I was the POL clerk for my antiaircraft battery and we stocked any kind of chemical acccording to the POL allocation chart and the MTOE.  Just my .02BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:I don't know what they use to classify a "commercial" acetylene tank. What I have is a 390cu ft Acetylene tank. I didn't think it was, but I took a picture of the stamping. I put my son next to it for size reference. He is 14yrs old and not scrawny. Ok, I took a pic of the smaller tank next to his leg. And a picture of the valve on the smaller tank. I went to the big orange box store and they have a lincoln torch setup and those tanks are even smaller than mine and are not the same size fitting either. What a mess. One size for one product is what I think we should have. Kinda like trailer balls. 2-5/16" for everything. That's what I want to see.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I'd need to see the valve on the larger cylinder to identify it. Since you mentioned earlier the regs were a CGA 510, I'd guess that's what is on there. It's pretty easy to tell the CGA 510 valves from the CGA 300's. The valve on the CGA 510 is female, and the CGA 300 valve is male. The small cylinder you have is a 40 cf "B" size cylinder and uses a CGA 320. In that case you would want one of the last two adapters shown in my previous link to hook up the male CGA 510 reg to your male CGA520 cylinder.  Keep in mind the withdrawal rate on the smaller cylinder when cutting and heating. Most tips will out draw that size cylinder, so you will need to keep the usage short and stick with as small a tip as possible..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I already ruled out using the smaller tank for the exact reason. I need to draw quite a bit for what I intend to cut. Looks like i am going to have to haul the large cylinder out and deal with all the safeties of doing so. still, I had 3 of those small cylinders. I gave one to MarkBall2. I doubt he ever even got a regulator for it. Thanks guys. I am going to take the easy road and just go to AirGas and tell the guys what I have and what I need. They always take care of me that way. And now....I am going to look into a propane rig just for simplicity.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I use propane for mobile work, and acetylene or LP at home. LP is very convenient. No reason you can't bring a small acetylene cylinder too, It's only a tip swap. The generous (ask Stick-man) T-Bone is selling an SR 461 LP regulator if you want more pressure than your acetylene reg allows. The largest cutting torches aren't acetylene, they are LP, and you can draw ample LP from a BBQ cylinder for most common jobs.
