Reply:For me I tell people don't skip the basic things: think it out first, work piece/work area setup, correctly set-up you equipment & have healthy craftsmenship in your work. If somebody works fast but don't care I wouldn't keep him around. After you progress on these things you will be surprised how quick you your will be!
Reply:Practice, practice and more practice. Means higher volts, amps and more wire if you wire weld. Just remember what you are welding on. Get the heat to high and you'll just blast right through it. If your not the only welder at work ask someone who's been doing it longer. Don't take but a minute for a quick demonstration. Most guys/gals are happy to show ya I have found over the years. Been welding for a long time, took a break from it for about 5 years but even when I did it everyday I was not afraid to ask the guy who'd been doing it 30 years for tips. Nothing beats experience.Last edited by MTtrainguy; 03-25-2014 at 10:49 PM.
Reply:What type of welding do you do and on what ?  Better fit ups = faster welds.
Reply:The welds aren't going to be much faster, it's the time between when the arc is lit. I've worked with people who situate everything just how they like it and stop and get up to take breaks and go to the bathroom 10 times and blah blah blah... hood down, focus on welding, plan out your next movements before you get there. I've trained myself to stay thinking several steps ahead in any task I do. This alone has made huge increases in productivity and efficiency and greatly minimizes mistakes or painting yourself into a corner. And it makes people think you know what you're doing ;-) lolDo this and you can allow more time for your actual slower welding and still pass up other more experienced welders in the shop. Work smarter not harder... to sum it up in 2 words though: Work EthicLast edited by MikeGyver; 03-26-2014 at 05:52 AM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:It has taken me years to get really fast at welding.  All I can say is practice practice practice, and eventually the speed will come.

Reply:Burpee, there you go again inciting jealousy.
Reply:You need to get a racing welding machine, not your average stock welding machine, one that has been hopped up to run faster. Then you just need to learn how to keep up with it.
Reply:Based on my experience, you tell your boss to f' off.DISCLAIMER - My guess is you work production welding, a supervisors job is going to be to get more out of you, sometimes it's a useful tactic trying to get more out of people gets them to get their numbers as they feel they are being watched more carefully, it keeps them from sluffing off.  I already went above and beyond the call of my job and generally supervisors respected the me and the job I did, that doesn't mean they liked me though.  When they would try to get me to do more, I would get in their face about it because there were so many around me slacking on their jobs, I always got my job done.  If I had a off day and messed up and had to rework, I still got my numbers for that day.  There was days that I would have to rework other peoples mess ups because they didn't know how to do anything other than lay down a weld, I'd still get my work done.  I was always there for overtime if I was needed, it takes time but if you do a good job and prove you know what you're doing, you'll get respect, and you can tell your boss to f' off.Last edited by Antibling; 03-26-2014 at 03:28 PM.

Reply:Option 1:You get a 220v mig welder capable of handling .045 wire.  Set the machine to "Full Military Power" (aka: "Full Take-off Power) and let 'er fly.  Option 2:You get a welder capable of handling 5/32, 3/16 or 7/32" Lincoln 7024's (aka: "Jetweld").  Set the machine to Warp factor-6, weld flat (think "drag strip") and hang on!  Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:I've done production welding before.  I found it tedious and very repetitive.  Some things I learned was sometime if you slow down, you'll speed up.  You need to know what you can bull rush threw and what you need to take a little more precision on.  Put the weld in 1 time.  Find a routine if you can.  That's big.  Find ways to cut time, not quality and always keep working.  Even if your getting tired just keep doing something. In the end, in production welding, most of the time IN MY OPINION, the supervision doesn't give a **** about anything else but numbers.  That is what will make them look good which is all they care about.  Most of them cant tell you how or help you because they sucked a weiner to get where they are so they don't understand nor care about what your situation is.  I agree with what the other guy said about time and such.  Just don't sacrifice quality or they will get you on being slow and poor quality.  Most of all, take care of yourself.  Good luck and "burn that **** in hot."  Just a phrase.  weld at your ability.
