I am adding a trailer hitch to my box truck  it has a lift gate.  the draw bar is going to be about three feet long  i was wanting to know the recommended thickness for the tube i was going to use a two inch tube with a two and Three sixteenths receiver tube. I'm pulling a standard sixteen foot trailer with two 3500 pound axels.
Reply:And?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Does a lift gate have a horizontal load rating?                                                    MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Why not copy a Super Hitch design? Attach it to the frame, and build a long enough stingers to come out from under the lift gate.I built one years ago for a friend. Reply:And No you cant make that with a 120 volt mig.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. So YES you can own too many tools.
Reply:It is capable of lifting 1600 pounds.   That' s the only sticker i can find on it.  It is made by Waltco I'll try to find a link to a picture.

Reply:Are you planing on installing the hitch to the lift it's self? If so I bet the hydraulic cylinder doesn't last long.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Please do not attach to the lift part of the gate. You won't be able to pull from that. If you had pics we might be able to help design something that will work tho.
Reply:Correct way I'd to extend the frame trails and add a swing away hitch assembly for when you want to use the gateSent from my SCH-I545 using TapatalkTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I am planning to use a 2.5 tube by 3/16 thick and mount that through the pipe the gate is mounted to right under the cylinder. On my truck the pipe is  a 6 inch by 1/4" thick  welded to the truck with 3/8" plate.  I was planning to add a another brace under the truck.  My main question is I was planning to use a 2" by 1/4" tube to make the draw bar out of.  The bar will be about 3 feet long.    will the 1/4"  2" square tubing be strong enough at that length or do in need to go to a larger tube or a thicker tube or both?  I will post some pictures when i get back home this weekend.
Reply:Here is a mockup picture of what planning to do.  The round pipe is the mount for the hydrolic cylinder  and is a 6" pipe by 1/4" thick.      http://imgur.com/Q5z3pYV I did not draw any of the Gate components in this sketch.Last edited by lmctaggart; 03-28-2014 at 01:12 PM.Reason: adding
Reply:Why do you want to go with 2x2 tube? 3x3x3/16" would be stronger and not much more weight. I think 2x2 for that length would be weak for a tandem trailer. Also why go through the 6" pipe rather than under? Just wanting to understand your thoughts.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Ground clearance Is why I,m going through.  I'm trying to stay smaller because there is a hydraulic cylinder attached to the top of the tube.  Ill measure and see how much room I have.   What would i use to sleeve the 3"?  3.5 by 3/16?
Reply:These are allowable uniform loads. For center point loads divide these number in half. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Having thought about it some here is what I would do, but it may change once I see some pics of what you have. I would like to see good picks of the lift and how it's attached to the truck, but I think the 6" pipe is strong enough to do the job on it's own if it's attached to the truck properly. I would think it is because it lifts a lot of weight and further out than your hitch will be. I would go with 2-2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 3/16" tubes through the pipe, centered if possible. One on each side of the lift, but not much over 3' apart if possible. You can run 2-2" tubes out from there for your hitch. Weld 2-6" pieces of receiver tube crosswise on the end of them to run a 2 x 2 x 3/16 or 1/4" tube across to weld your ball mount to. You should use receiver tube for the 2 1/2" on the end of the 2x2 because 3/16 wall tube will let the 2x2 cross piece twist and you can't get 2x2 through 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 1/4" wall tube. You can pin all the pieces together so it all comes apart for gate use and storage. If the 6" tube is mounted good to the truck you shouldn't need anything behind that for support.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:My comment is going to be only on the receiver portion. You need to get the tube that is designed for that purpose the 3/16 wall is pretty thin and also has a seam inside that interferes with the slide in hitch. The hitch tube is slightly larger than 2.5 od by 1/4" wall with no seam on the inside. Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
