I don't have a pic but it's pretty simple. I have been asked to bid on a retangular frame that is 24"x18" 1 1/2" 16 ga. square tubeing one 3 sides, (mitered corners). One side is 1 1/2" x 1/4" flat bar. They also need to be powder coated. I have about 150 of these to make. I can do the work I just don't know what a fair price per piece would be. Thanks for your time.
Reply:That's easy.  Do some leg work.  Go buy material and build one.  Keep track of time from raw material to finished product.  Figure what you are worth per hour and do a little math.  Any time saving techniques you figure out after that is extra money in your pocket. My name's not Jim....
Reply:I would likely bid them at about $30 plus powder coating (just get a bid from your local powdercoater). I almost always talk my customers out of powder coating, as it is expensive and not as tough and good as people usually think it is. I'd add $5 each for paint. You are probably looking at 10-12 hours of work.

Reply:lol, he reckons he'd pump one in under 5 min, even if they were all cut and ready for jig work it'd still take longer just to tack them together.everything will be production line so i'd be at half an hour each in labour plus materials and get a quote from your local powder coaters, draw a quick sketch, email it to them with the quantities, follow it up half an hour later to see if they've got the quote and then wack 10% on the whole job to account for consumables and also dont forget delivery charges.
Reply:#1 - Your hourly labor rate should be in this range (depending on what county your in). Think of it like this... If you get the job and then break your arm .... You will have to pay someone to finish it.IRON0067-002 05/01/2011POWESHIEK COUNTY                                  Rates          FringesIRONWORKER, REINFORCING AND   STRUCTURAL.......................$ 22.69            16.63# 2 - Get a quote on your material.# 3 - How many can you build in a week?# 4 - What is the powder coater going to charge you for the lot?# 5 - Packaging / shipping ?# 6 - Overhead (electricity, rent, fuel, consumables, saw blades, grinding wheels, etc).# 7 - Profit ( 5%, 10 %, 25 %) ?I'll "ball park" an estimate @ $110 / each and you deliver them locally. When all the smoke clears, come back and let us know what the bottom figure was upon completion. Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. Reply:Thank you guys for the advice so far. I'm having difficulties using my time as the factor in determining the price. I figure there are several tools that if I had them I would go faster. That being said a guy could build one of there with a hack saw, O/A, and a file all the way through mechanized cutting and robotic welding. I am trying to figure out a market value price until I know where on the productivity curve I sit.
Reply:Well....... you could send a sketch to a few other shops in your area and ask for a quote.Who knows, if one of them can do it better / cheaper / faster than you then just sub the job to them and tack on your "management" fee. This is done all day, every day in the fabrication and business world. I have several contacts that make a nice living by simply being the "middle man". Food for thought.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go.
