I'm working on a "free" trailer my father got a couple weeks ago. Originally he was going to take it up to the cabin and use it for hauling the odd bit of firewood/junk around. I tore off the plywood that was on it, and found the main 2x3 tube cracked. Now it's turned into a full bore rebuild including sandblasting, new axle, and a bunch of work on my part. I'll post pictures when it's done (and I have time to find my memory card reader).Until then, I remember seeing someone had setup a tilt deck trailer with a handwinch (or maybe it was an electric winch) on the draw bar. This coupled with a floating vertical piece of tube allowed to use the winch to raise/lower the deck, and use it to pull things onto the trailer. Does anyone remember this thread, and if so can you provide the link for it. I've spent the last hour trying to find it as I'd like to set something like this up but have come up with nothing so far. Reply:No...that's not it. But thank you. I have thought about that, but I need the room in the back of my truck, and I have a topper on it, so that would be difficult without removing it. I may have come up with an idea that may work....see what I can do later today in between brunch and family supper...-Millermatic 211, Powermax 380, and way too many other tools to list....-Unofficial, professsional, garage tinkerer...

Reply:That's not the one, but that's a great idea. I do have an old hydraulic jack sitting out next to the garage. Maybe once I get the braces on the main tube finished up today I'll see if I can get something like that to work.-Millermatic 211, Powermax 380, and way too many other tools to list....-Unofficial, professsional, garage tinkerer...
Reply:Is this closer to what you're thinking?
Reply:That's not a bad idea, and a little more what I was thinking of....The trailer...I've stripped the lights and was going to hit it with the wire wheel...Decided to take the trailer to sand blast it. Thankfully, all the metal was sound and it was really only surface rustSandblasting....way easier than a wire wheel!Back from sandblasting and in primer...let the work begin! The pivot for the tilt deck....you can see where someone tried to fix this in the past. Needless to say, it's being replaced. I didn't even bother to sand blast it as it was coming out...New main tube welded inSetting up the new draw bar...the old was bent from someone welding the serial number into the side of it, and from someone jack-knifing it in the past. It's 3x3x0.188". A close up of the weld between the tubes of the new drawbar. A bottom view of the chain attachments (yes, I forgot to put the chain onto them before I welded them, so I'll use some quick links later). You can also see 4 rosette welds inside the tube. There are another 4 on the other side as well to be sure nothing comes apart.A view of the 3/4" pin that will secure the tilt deck to the main tube. No special clamps or anything...nice and simple.-Millermatic 211, Powermax 380, and way too many other tools to list....-Unofficial, professsional, garage tinkerer...
Reply:A view of the new plates I made up for the pivot of the tilt deck. It's 1/4" plate, and are much longer to spread out the forces through the tilt deck. That's a 3/4" grade 8 bolt. The part on the main tube will be sleeved to ensure the holes don't open up (the original design was a 5/8" bolt and no sleeve).Found these at Princess Auto....going to mount them forward of the fenders on each side to store straps and other needed trailer items. I'll have to come up with some kind of lock mechanism. Now...before anyone flames me about the safety in a trailer and welding, etc. I am more than confident in my welds, and have had them checked over by a very competent (licensed and ticketed) welder. He has no problem with them. I welcome your comments. There is more to come, including the use of a hand winch to lift the bed.I apologize about the size of the pics...I'm using facebook to host them and they're bigger in size than in the past....-Millermatic 211, Powermax 380, and way too many other tools to list....-Unofficial, professsional, garage tinkerer...
