hi, i found what i think is a good deal:http://sacramento.craigslist.org/tls/2904638742.htmli talked to him and he said the setup has been sitting for 2 years and he's never used it, it was given to him by a friend. i'm guessing the tanks are out of date but i'm going to go check it out in the morning. what should i look for? what do you think its worth? any info to help a noob out would be great.thank you
Reply:It's hard to tell from the pict, but I think that's a 75 cf acet and an 80 cf O2 cylinder. I wouldn't worry to much about the dates, because if you swap them most places will either not bother to check, or simply charge you a nominal retest fee, maybe $20/ cyl. when you exchange them.Price seems decent. Around here the 80 cf O2 alone "new" would run you $160 or so at the LWS. A  cheap torch and reg set would set you back at least $100, and if they are name brand regs, depending on the type, quite a bit more.Things to look at...Condition of the hose. If it's old and dry rotted / cracking. expect to need a new one. Reg condition, can't really tell much from the picts. Hook them up and check and see of there's pressure in the cylinders. Name brand regs ( Harris, Victor, etc.) vs the inexpensive import knock offs. Does it come with anything but the cutting torch?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thats half the price there going for here.Beer has food value, Food has no beer value
Reply:forgot to ask but i don't think so.
Reply:and thank you guys for the fast reply.looks like one of the gauges is missing the lens, so they might be damaged but i don't want to jump to conclusions.
Reply:Looks like the acet reg might be missing the lens on one gauge. The 2nd might be turned around backwards for some reason.  Gauges aren't too bad, maybe $12 each or so, but even though it's on the acet side, I'd still buy the ones from the LWS vs generic gauges. It's extremely important to do this with O2 since the regs need to be O2 clean there. Just make sure to back the T handles out all the way before testing the regs, then crank them in a bit, say 4-6 psi on acet and 20-40 psi on O2 and watch and see if they stay at that pressure while you talk a bit. that will let you get an idea if the regs have any seat issues. If the regs are imports and the hose is cracked / dry rotted, I might work on the price a bit. Around me a 75 cf acet runs $110 filled, the 80 O2 $161 filled, and an import  torch set with tips about $99-$150 to give you some sort of numbers to work from. They have the whole package for $399 complete. Start adding up items you might have to add and see if it's worth the "deal". New 25' of hose ( $28), Hydro tests ( $20 each), Fills if empty ( don't have current prices on those.. my last 80 cf O2 was $35 IIRC) It can add up fast if you don't watch it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:well, talked to the guy last night and told him i would come by today (friday) around 10 am. called him at 10 and he sold it already. anyway, just a question for you guys. is the date stamped on the bottle the exp. date or the date it was stamped? i have a helium tank at work that is stamped 5(some letters and numbers) 08.
Reply:Sucks the guy sold the stuff on you. As far as the hydro stamps, it's the date it was stamped. If all it says is "5(some letters and numbers) 08. " then it would need to be retested after 5 / 2013 because the test is good for 5 years. In this 1st pict ( white cylinder), the original test date was 1 ( jan) of 98, and it was retseted in  2 ( feb) of 2003.The 2nd cylinder ( green) was tested 6 ( june) of 2010, but because it has a "star" after the date, it's good for 10 years rather than only 5.The "(some letters and numbers)" as you describe it between the month and year of the test is simply a key assigned to the hydro shop that allows someone to go back and locate the test data if needed at some point. Each shop has it's own combination of characters or symbols that it's assigned. The "+" at the end of these examples shows the cylinder was tested to 10% over the "rated" pressure on the cylinder. This was started in WWII and allowed gas companies to "overfill" certain cylinders by 10%. As a user it really doesn't do much for you today other than explain why some places will fill some cylinders higher than other places will. Some hydro shops automatically  "plus" test cylinders, others don't unless specifically asked. Attached Images. No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:thank you thats exactly what i was looking for. most of the oxy rigs i see on CL goes for around 250-300. is that a good deal or normal price? of course thats not with the high end regulators, just ok ones.
Reply:Near me I usually see some rigs for $150-200 semi regularly. $300 to me seems high when I can get a new set up for $400. Each area can vary, so I can't sat around you..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
