I'm about half way through my first real welding class..... not just the CE courses....... Lot's of great instruction........ instant feedback........ and I basically look forward to Monday and Wednesday nights almost as much as I like Saturday's......I took a couple pics with the I-Phone and thought I would post them here, warts and all.......The first pic........ Overhead 6010Next post..... Attached ImagesPrecision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:These three of flat 7018...Pic 1 is the first bead, Pic 2 is the second, and the third is ...... well you get the idea.......I like to draw arrows now to point out my obvious errors..... that way when the instructor comes in, he at least knows I'm aware of them.... and he can show me the things I don't notice...... and hopefully I can improve faster.....I struggle with tie ins, rod angle..... speed....... steadiness...... and.... other things I'm sure.... Reply:And a poor shot of a three pass........ 7018 Vertical Up.......Start and stops in the same spot on pass two and three...... Dang.... I know better than that...... but did it anyway........Next Post Attached ImagesPrecision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Is your instructor passing you on from flat to horz, vertical, then to overhead? Or are you doing what you want, then showing him.. The reason I ask, is because one should get flat down first, then on to horzi, then vert, then overhead..
Reply:For vertical, I'd like to see a bit of oscillation to get the toes to wet in better. If you are, you are spending too much time in the center and not enough on the sides. I find students have a very hard time with straight stringers like this with no oscillation at all. Most simply can't watch both sides at once and get the exact spot to get the toes to wet in well together. If they swing side to side slightly, they can concentrate on each side individually and get a better bead profile. It doesn't take much, you don't have to do a weave, just a slight bit of motion and a brief pause on the sides.I'd also like to see those beads washed in together better on many of those welds. Looks like you are aiming at the wrong place and getting the beads too far apart. The 7018 beads in the 2nd post washed in well for the most part, but your other ones need more work. Portions of the 6010 bead look very nice, and that's not all that easy to do many times..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:He won't move me to the next position until I have it on the previous position........I also have been taking random pics over the last several weeks so the ones I posted aren't the ones that passed me to the next position...... Just the ones I had the thought to pull out the phone from the tool box.....I got so sick of 6010 uphill I was seeing red...... But I sucked at it for a long time........Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Thanks DSW...... I'm hearing the same in class and am focusing on getting rid of the valley between beads two and three.......For vertical up I have found now that counter clockwise circles with a 123 pause at 6 o'clock has allowed me to measure my progression and see what I'm doing with the puddle...... For some reason the side to side wasn't working well for me, but the circle and pause seemed to work well......Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:On vert up I struggle with arc blow too..... Reply:A couple of things to try and fine tune where you are having troubles. First throw the lead over your shoulder, or take up enough slack to weld the joint and pin it between your leg and the table, or hang it up on something, take the weight off your arm to help you concentrate exactly where you need to angle and point the rod. Next do a dry run with your helmet up, visualize where and how you are going to lay that bead. Plan that route so you have full range of motion with no snags. A lot of the time ill notice the coating on my rod is not burning off evenly, or not wetting out properly, so ill rotate back and fourth as I'm pushing that rod hard into the steel, like your turning the key in your car. Your welds look good and strong. I'm sure they would provide a permanent bond for what they need to do. Just some tweaking from here on out. That 6010 overhead was really good in my opinion, because that would be the hardest to do.  PS. always use clean/ new lenses, because if you cant see, you will just be fighting yourself.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:Did they show you the vertical weave? If its acceptable where you're from I recommend trying it, its always good to be versatile in different welding techniques!
