I am laying out and designing a new piece of furniture and dropped into a hole I am not real knowledgable in. In short I have used plating in the past but never zinc, always chem-film, anodize, nickle or chrome.I have a certain look that I want to achieve and there are about 11 different zinc processes, and I am not sure which gives me my desired effect. The link below has a couple of pieces with the finish I am looking for the range hood and the file cabinet and counter. http://www.heavymetalworks.com/search/label/zincThe choices at my local plater are:ASTM B 633, TYPE I - WITHOUT SUPPLEMENTAL CHROMATE TREATMENTASTM B 633, TYPE II - GOLDASTM B 633, TYPE II - BLACKASTM B 633, TYPE III - CLEAR, BLUE CHROMATE TREATMENTASTM B 633, TYPE III - ULTRA SEAL TREATMENTASTM B 633, TYPE II - GOLD CHROMATE SC3 - .0005 THICKASTM B 633, TYPE III - CLEAR / BLUE CHROMATE TRIVALENT CHROMIUM SC3 - .0005 THICKROHS:ZINC - ROHS/TCP COMPLIANT (TRIVALENT CHROME)ASTM B 633, TYPE I - WITHOUT SUPPLEMENTAL CHROMATE TREATMENTASTM B 633, TYPE III - CLEAR, BLUE TRIVALENT CHROMATE ASTM B 633, TYPE III - ULTRA SEAL TREATMENTASTM B 633, TYPE III - CLEAR / BLUE CHROMATE TRIVALENT CHROMIUM SC3 - .0005 THICKWhat I am wanting to build is this tweaked, only all metal with 5 drawers ( except maybe the drawers might be just metal faced, not decided on that yet ) with a inset granite top:http://www.zincdoor.com/p/Worlds-Awa...WAREECECH.aspxA couple of last items it will need to break down into three pieces and bolt together ( top to legs ) to fit in the plating tank. And a final question I know that surface finish will be important ( removing mill scale and polishing etc. ) do you think that flap disks and scotch polishing pads will get it or will it need to be sandblasted/bead blasted? Anyone know which of the above zinc processes will get me my desired look?

Reply:My local plater is about 45 miles away, and it difficult getting off work early to get over there while they are still open.

Reply:SC1 or 2 if it's going to be indoor stuff. Stick with type I, V, or VI.http://www.waterburyplating.com/news...d=26&Itemid=26Your pre-plated surface finish will affect the plated finish. If you want it dull/matte, then blast it. If you want it kind of satiny, then use scotchbrite pads or similar.
Reply:dbotos,Good link that helps with understanding the classifications. Yes its an indoor piece of furniture a vanity so class I or II are good for service, I need to look at the class III blue though as that might be what I am looking for.I guess I will need to make a trip over and and look at some samples, I think that bead blasting will be required as I am thinking my customer ( daughter who always wants me to build high $ furniture for her ) wants a matt finish ( saves me a LOT of flap disk time ). I offically got the go ahead, but I am going to stretch it out over months, make a real set of prints and be extremely fussy on this piece. Basic thoughts are 2x2 tubing for a frame structure, sheet metal parts, and some bent pieces of sheet metal, all needs to bolt together so I can get the pieces in the tank, and everything is subject to change as I do the prints and look for symetry. There are are a couple of design elements still rolling around in my head, particularly drawers ( 1. all metal or metal faced wood drawers 2. and the inside corners on the slightly oriental jog on the legs, I don't want weld seams to show particularly on the inside corners). Thanks again.
Reply:Check out the V&S galvanizing site, they offer many finish options. They have branches throughout the Country.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Tozzi, Checked out the V&S site, closest to me is about 1500 miles. I want it local if I can, as shipping would add up, on a all metal piece. |
