I am a lampworker by trade and would like to make my own surface mix torch.  Here is a few pictures of what I hope to achieve:I know that glass torches (lampwork torches) need a spread out fire "diameter"; hence the many smaller tubes on the inside.  But I need detailed plans and instructions on how to make one that will be safe and work well at the same time.  I figured a welding forum might help as they use oxygen in their torches just as glass torches do.  The only difference is the gas; welding torches use acetylene while glass torches use propane.I would really appreciate any help with this matter.  Thank you.
Reply:True, WELDING torches use acetylene, but for cutting, brazing, heating, and general catching stuff on fire, you'll find we frequently use oxy/propane too, because it's cheaper. All that appears to be is a few brass fittings, 2 needle valves, and a handful  of small diameter brass tubing from the hardware store (stuffed inside the burner tube). That thing should have flashback arrestors between the hoses and the valves to prevent accidental backfeeding of gases. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Sounds great, thanks for all of the help.

Reply:I would be tempted to get one of the newer "swirl" propane torches, the really hot ones, and adapt it to mix Oxygen instead of using air."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:maybe instead of a those small tubes, use a solid piece of metal with holes drilled into it.  Assuming you have a suitable drill press or lathe.miller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
Reply:The thing about glass torches is that they need a soft and regular flame.  It heats the glass to a malleable state rater than 'brazes' it.  A lot of designs incorporate the same design pictured above.  It looks like I'm going to have to go through the original designer/creator of the torch to get a good tutorial, but I greatly appreciate the links and advice given so far.  I'm quite skeptical when it comes to 2,200 degree flames.  Thank you all,-Ssalg
Reply:Iv'e also done a lot of fun work with glass and a soft flame. I went to my welding store and they ordered a glass head for my victor torch. It is about 1and1/2 inches in diameter, about 2 inches long and screws right on to my combination welding cutting torch.  It has at least 60 holes in it and makes a realy long soft flame so that I can heat up close and then hold the heat out further until I have another piece of glass hot enough to fuse them together. I think 15 years ago it cost me about 45 dollars. It would cost that much to make one and I'm not to sure you could do as good a job.  Mac
Reply:There is a little too much 'unknown' for me in the picture above.  Where is the gas mixing?  At the bottom of the torch (i.e. the tubes are just there to 'straighten out / widen the flame,) or do the gasses stay separate until the tip of the torch?  I could see the inner brass tubes going all the way down to the fuel gas fitting and being welded in a lump inside that fitting, then the other fitting adds oxygen 'in the spaces around the tubes,' to keep the gasses separate until the tip of the torch (the torch is then essentially a bunch of tiny gas torches, fed by extra oxygen at the outlets).Hmmm...lots to think about...but hard to tell what could be going on, until you get ahold of one of those and have the chance to take it apart.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:As previously mentioned, flashback should the the first thing on your mind. Due to that danger in a home made torch, if I were in your shoes I would go to harbor freight or source another cheap oxyfuel torch and make a bigger diffused rosebud for it. You can adapt oxyfuel torches for just about any fuel type and you can avoid unnecessary hazards simultaneously.
