Hey guys whats the difference between the two are they most of the same parts or not even close to same parts? New to trying to buy a welder Experience with stick and mig but want to learn tig
Reply:If you have a choice, get the HF - it has built-in high frequency which you will want if you plan to work with aluminum, and it also offers HF on start only for other metals.  Even if you don't want it high frequency now, you might later. There may be other differences, but the high frequency addition is the obvious one.
Reply:Can you add HF onto any dialarc? and convert it to tig and how much would that cost if your not planning on tig welding very much?
Reply:It would be a lot smarter to buy the HF model and have the built-in HF for when you need/want it rather than trying to add it on.  There are add-on HF units out there by Miller and others, but I'd think you'd spend less selling your old welder and buying one with HF built in.You don't need HF to TIG weld.  All you need to scratch-start TIG off of most any DC stick welder is an air-cooled torch with built-in gas valve and a brass adapter doohickey that you clamp your stinger onto to supply power to the torch.  And a bottle of Argon, a flowmeter, and some tungsten, filler rod, etc.  If you TIG very much or plan to, it's a lot nicer to have a machine with built-in gas valve (no more leaving it on at the torch accidentally), a footpedal or fingertip current control, a cooler and water-cooled torch, etc.  My Dialarc HF is set up with these things.  I rarely TIG, but appreciate these basic features when I do.Dialarc HF's aren't rare.  I would wait for one if I were in the market for a Dialarc.
Reply:Where do you guys look to find welders by you other than Craig list?Welders seam to go fast around here in Kansas.I think I will wait unless i can get a good buy on a dial arc... How much do dial arc HF normally go for?
Reply:My local area has a couple small classified ad papers that are free for individuals to advertise in - they cost $1.50 or so at the gas station and come out every week.  They are about 30 pages long and full of deals from private sellers only.  Your area might have something like that.CL is another resource.Ebay is another although it's getting more rare to find screaming deals there.Farm and company auctions are another place to look.In my area there's basically no difference in price of a Dialarc and a Dialarc HF - they're both out-of-date transformer welders with few people actively looking for them.  Either would go for $400-$500 bare, maybe a few hundred more if equipped with a working TIG setup including bottle, regulator, torch, footpedal or fingertip control, etc.  I paid $1200 for mine several years ago, and didn't realize it wasn't worth anywhere near that.It pays to be patient, but have your money ready and don't let the door hit you on the way out when you find the right deal.
