Reply:What a coincidence, "Lanse" here on WW (ChuckE2009 on YouTube) just posted this video today about beveling pipe with O/A.  I'm sure the machine he used though is $$$$. Still, it's a neat video to see how it's done.  Do it manually with a steady hand.   Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:I usually use a beveling machine like in the above video (If it's between 2" and 24" I have it covered, plus a band type for big bore pipe of various sizes). This last week, I had to weld a cap on an old well casing that I had extended 12' on a dirt job we're doing.  It is an 8" casing, and I just welded a piece of old scrap 8" i had laying around on it, so the end still sticking out of the ground was pretty rough... Anyway, I don't know why i didn't load a beveler on the rig, they're stacked out here in my garage.  So I used a wrap-a-round and soapstone to mark it, hand beveled with torch then cleaned it up and put a land on it with the grinder.  Not really a big deal, just took about 30 minutes instead of 5.  I hadn't hand beveled anything in a LONG time, turned out fine though.-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion
Reply:Only thicker pipe I work with is header tubes for turbo cars so I just turn the taper in the lathe.
Reply:vp; very smart- tacking that scrap piece to the header base to prevent movement.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:If you put an angle torch head on an AO barrel you can hold the torch/barrel parallel with the pipe while cutting, and it leaves a good bevel. With very little touch up with a grinder.      Now back in the day, and some less quality concerned fitters will cut the bevel with the AO torch and beat a land on with a hammer, actually works pretty good, but not for code or quality work. CEP really does have the best setup for making coupons to practice weld. At our union hall they have plasma machines fixed to positions that make perfect bevels, but that set up costs thousands of dollars just to make coupons. At work for testing, we just use a pipe threaded with a chuck. Works great and pretty damn consistent.Local 83
