My uncle passed away and his wife gave me a small cutting torch with a oxygen and propane tank. Will the propane get hot enough to cut metal. I don't know what my uncle was doing with this setup. He was a retired welder.
Reply:I cut with propane all the time, here is a nice demo of what you can cut with it[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cMInn5mR9Y[/ame]Last edited by TozziWelding; 04-01-2012 at 06:29 PM.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Jim Colt:"That can be cut with a properly adjusted plasma cutter" "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Link to a plasma cutting video....piercing and cutting 2" steel at 400 amps.http://www.hypertherm.com/en/Trainin...ideo=HYP109177 Ignore the music please! And...notice the auto height control climbing over the pierce puddle without a collision. 2" is cut at 30 inches per minute. And that is my hand at the end of the video.....Plasma can cut stainless and aluminum to over 6".Jim ColtLast edited by jimcolt; 04-02-2012 at 09:29 AM.
Reply:Because of the secondary BTU;s, Propane will cut thicker steel and Heat faster than Acetylene.  There is very little difference in the time to start a cut.  John G.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Is it ok to use an acetylene regulator on the propane tank. That's how he had it set up. I don't want to kill my self. If the acetylene regulator is ok to use what do I set it at for cutting. Thanks to all that responded.
Reply:The vast majority of acetylene regs work, but we'd need the MAKE AND MODEL to tell you since we can't read minds.Lincolns are all OK per an email from their support I posted elsewhere.
Reply:Is there an adapter to allow an acetylene regulator to thread into a 25# BBQ propane tank, and is it safe to use with the standard acetylene torch.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:Many regs are CGA-510 and fit fine. What regulator do you have? It's nice to POST SPECIFICS so people don't have to ask more questions in order to help.Pic has a CGA-510 fitting. That screws into old and new BBQ cylinders. The late-style OPD BBQ cylinders have an internal CGA-510 thread as well as the plastic nut. Attached ImagesLast edited by farmall; 04-03-2012 at 10:12 AM.
Reply:I have been using acetylene regulators for oxyfuel torches on propane cylinders for many years. They are made for it. Think about it - would they have the same fitting if it weren't safe? You think the guys at CGA don't know what's safe and what isn't?
Reply:I also have been using acetylene regulators on propane for years, however assuming that just because it will connect means that it's safe to connect is very bad.Do the homework to verify your particular model of regulator is ok for both gasses.Or buy a propane specific regulator.  As an added benefit the propane-only regulator will put out a lot more pressure.  The added pressure will make those propane-air preheat torches really sing!Remember, don't hook your propane-only regulator that outputs higher than 15psi to acetylene.  It's too easy to run the acetylene pressure too high and have it go BOOM.  Just because it will connect doesn't mean it's safe.Last edited by AndyA; 04-03-2012 at 01:21 PM.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:This torch looks to be a victor because they have a V stamped on the regulator. The acetylene regulator screws into a 20 # propane tank like it was made for it. After some reading and talking to the guy at the local welding supply it looks like I can use the acetylene regulator on the propane tank. All I have to get is a propane cutting tip. If I'm doing anything wrong tell me so I don't go boom in the garage. I use a propane casting torch every day at work and all we have on the torch is regular hoses and we haven't had any deterioration on the hose after ten years. I'm beginning to think the welding supply store tells us that so we buy the more expensive hoses for the propane. My wife just said if I'm trying to kill myself make sure I do a good job so she gets my $100.000 life insurance. What a wonderful wife. Thanks to all who commented.Last edited by kctgb; 04-03-2012 at 06:23 PM.
