This i a picture of one of my most used things in my shop. There are a lot of people  on here that would love one of these when they get tired of lifting. MY CHALLENGE IS TO BUILD ONE AND ADD YOUR  PICTURES TO THIS THREAD. Top beam is 6", the center pipe is 6" and it is 8' to bottom of beam. Bottom plate is 3/4"[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]Last edited by Jo Diesel; 10-19-2012 at 10:20 AM.Reason: I screwed up picturesMiller 180,Esab 300I TIG Lincoln Stick [1950's} Victor Torches, Dewalt chop saw, Enco 9x48 Mill,  48x60 home shop with Gantry crane and Pit.

Reply:By the way I did not build this. It is a production unit. I got it for removing it from the local USPS. They used to use it to haul coal ashes out of the basement.  Took me 30 minutes to cut the bolts off and load it upMiller 180,Esab 300I TIG Lincoln Stick [1950's} Victor Torches, Dewalt chop saw, Enco 9x48 Mill,  48x60 home shop with Gantry crane and Pit.

Reply:What really sucksabout  a free-swinging jib boom and free-rolling trolley is that with the slightest shift or deflection, gravity causes the boom, trolly, and  load, to race to the low spot - with a frenzy!IF despite the posted warnings, someone insists on building a crane, I would steer them towards a gantry (bridge) design over the pictured jib style; gantry is much more predictable in both use and design criteria.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 10-19-2012 at 12:43 PM.
Reply:This is rated at 1000Lb and I have had that much on it. I try really hard to not overload it. It has had  big blocks and custome snow plows hanging with no problem. The floor has a drain right next to it but is shimed streight and it does not move unless you move it. When it is max loaded things tend to roll to end of beam but it is manageable. I would go to a heavier top beam.  The problem with A frames is they are always in the way. I had one.Miller 180,Esab 300I TIG Lincoln Stick [1950's} Victor Torches, Dewalt chop saw, Enco 9x48 Mill,  48x60 home shop with Gantry crane and Pit.

Reply:Is that a crack on the bottom roller plate? Picture 3. Or is it flaking paint from being painted 150 times.I forgot how to change this.
Reply:White is the original paing. I have painted it twice since it has been inside. Was originally outside. Yes crack in in paintMiller 180,Esab 300I TIG Lincoln Stick [1950's} Victor Torches, Dewalt chop saw, Enco 9x48 Mill,  48x60 home shop with Gantry crane and Pit.
Reply:the funny thing about paint, it usually doesn't crack unless there is something moving underneath it. either rust forming and growing, or metal fatigue/cracking causing the paint to stretch and eventually crack. Either way, it's not good in this case. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:I don't know about this..But one thing is for sure..I don't think I should build one either.I would not get under that with a load on it......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:From the pictures it looks like the welds are of sound quality and it looks heavy enough to handle 1/2 ton load, However my biggest issue would be how well it is anchored to the floor! I have seen concrete anchors pull out of their holes due to improper application! Then again I would choose or build a overhead bridge crane over this style of lifting device everytime!Lincoln Ranger8 Hobart Handler 135Hobart Hefty CC/CVIronworkers Local #712
Reply:Man if this thing is considered bad... You guys should see the one at the machine shop I was at a couple months ago.... mostly made out of 1.5'' x 3/16  angle with some HORRIBLE fluxcore  welds.... I laughed when the said he was going to lift a 6.5 diesel engine with it...  Their engine crank rack was even worse!! Now that was scary!!  I just wish I had some pics....Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st

Reply:I can show you much bigger ones that are bolted down, I think many of you have never been around these.  Go in just about any factory and they are littered with them, all different designs.
Reply:Originally Posted by Mick120First pic is of a jib  in my shop, the thing's been there since the place was built back in the 60's, it used to have a hydraulic accumulator on the other side of the building, with two hoses running across the rafters. Reply:I don't know if that was engineered for it or if someone just hung that set up from those trusses, the point loading of the trusses would concern me for anything real heavy, by that I mean over a Ton,even a 1000lb point load might be to much in the center of the truss, I don,t think I would put a 1000 lb load on the roof in a 1 or 2 square foot area, would you? can't tell what that chain fall is rated for, looks on the light side but I have 1 that will pick 8 ton. would not try that on this setup.Last edited by kolot; 10-22-2012 at 09:53 PM."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Sorry! I just thought this is a really simple design that is over 40 years of use with the first 25 outdoors and has been regulary used up to capacity which is 1000# and a little more a few times, It is bolted with 1/2" wedge anchors to 4" reinforced concrete and has been in my shop for 15 years and there is no cracking around crane.Miller 180,Esab 300I TIG Lincoln Stick [1950's} Victor Torches, Dewalt chop saw, Enco 9x48 Mill,  48x60 home shop with Gantry crane and Pit.

I had a steel building and asked the manufacture and they said NO!!!!Miller 180,Esab 300I TIG Lincoln Stick [1950's} Victor Torches, Dewalt chop saw, Enco 9x48 Mill,  48x60 home shop with Gantry crane and Pit.
Reply:Here is the one in my buddy's shop, it is a mirror image of the one his dad built on the other side of the building many years ago. This thing has done alot of heavy work and is none the worse for wear.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I've bought and moved a few of these at work.  There are different types of them and perhaps there are some that you don't need extra footing for, but all of them I've had to deal with required a pretty substantial foundation, with anchors that go way down into the concrete.  http://store.americancrane.com/viewi...n-500-capacityLast edited by Chuck; 11-08-2012 at 03:47 PM.Miller 250x & Lincoln V205-TSmith Oxy-Prop torch
