Stick Welding with my Syncrowave 250?

So I have just started getting back into the swing of Stick welding. What are the preferred settings for stick welding 3/16 angle?  Will painted angle disrupt or cause a bad bead? I have noticed that my syncrowave will only initiate an ark while stick welding if I press the foot pedal. Is this normal?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:What Tuscany said. Also, if you want to avoid cleaning the steel real well, use 6010 or 6011, and it'll eat through the paint/grease/dirt, though you won't get as pretty a weld as you would if you cleaned to shiny steel and used 7018.
