Northern industrial hybrid multiprocess machine

Just joined have been certified for about 6 years not a pro that has done everything.I have been looking for a welder and my friends father purchased a multiprocess northern industrial 230v inverter based welder last year. He asked if I wanted to buy it and to be honest im iffy about it. I decided to go look at it and see what all he has welded with it and I got to say im actually impressed by this chinese box. Im used to miller products, thats how I was taught and what we used on the production line at a factory that makes fifth wheels for rigs. Has anyone ever used a northern industrial product? It can only tig dc but it actually came with a aluminum gun for the mig which suprised me. He is only wanting like 300 and throwing in some odds and ends (extra 7018's,6013's,6010's, a welding cart, some tig parts and rods). I realize its still a chinese product but for home use welding lawnmower decks stuff like that it seems like a good machine and versatile just have not ran across one and was wondering if anyone has used them and what the long term result ended up being. As long as I can make my money back out of it in repairs I honestly dont care what names on the case/
Reply:I also have searched the internet forums have not found much info saw good reviews on the northern tool website but that could easily be biased.

Reply:I disagree with the guys above, that $300 can go towards a good quality machine. When welding we tend to naturally progress you'll go from "just Mower decks"  to car parts then onto things that are critical and need to hold. Save the $300 and put the money towards a quality machine

Reply:If he buys this machine and finds that he needs more power he should be able to get most, if not all, of his money back out of it. Then he can roll that into a larger purchase. Reply:There are a few posts in the "Other Manufacturer's" forum, here within the WeldingWeb forum.I have one of these machines, along with a Lincoln Weld Pak 155, and a Miller 250 Twin.I bought it because it has a higher amperage rating than the Lincoln, and more importantly, a higher duty cycle.I have not been disappointed with it.I have not used it for MIG yet, but have used it with flux core, and have also used the stick function.I can say it is way hotter than the Weld Pak, and similar in characteristics to a Lincoln Power MIG 180 C that I used to have, though maybe a slightly more "digging" arc.Like the 180C, it has infinite adjustment on wire and voltage, so you can set your wire speed, and fine tune the arc via the voltage adjustment, rather than changing your deposit rate by speeding up or slowing down the wire speed.You will not find a Miller or Lincoln with near the capacity and functionality as this for twice the price he is talking about, even used.Buy it.If it works, and is complete, and It turns out you just don't like it, PM me, and I'll give you the 300 for it, just to have a second one.I can get that much for my weld Pak 155.If it has the included spool gun, it is a no-brainer.Use the additional money you would have spent on a blue or red machine to buy some steel, build a of BBQ pit, sell it, and get your investment back.Last edited by geezerbill; 04-18-2014 at 10:35 AM.
