Bad Gas.......

NO not farts.......LOL  I hooked up a new bottle of gas yesterday and started to weld some parts and the weld had black flakes floating up?I changed bottles and it went away......It's the same gas company I have been using for years and never had a problem........With the price of this bottle (92.00) it shouldn't have happen.......Blueshield -1   Argon/Helium  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:Definitely not impossible.I had it happen twice in a row as an entire batch from Airgas (the entire fill line or main tank they were filling from) had trace moisture in it that was dissociating into 02 and H2 in the arc plasma.My welds on Alu with bad gas looked just like yours. Little to no cleaning action, black oxides floating around,etc.Took the sales ticket back and swapped both times. Laurel gas guys were pretty good about the whole fiasco lol.I've noticed it's worse with the smaller tanks that small shops or hobbyists would use. Folks sometimes run them down to 0, leave valve open and air gets in with ambient temperature changes.
