I have a excavator bucket I will be repairing Monday. What I need to know is what electrode should I use. I was thinking 7018 1/8"-5/32". I'm not sure what welder will be supplied for me, an engine drive, most likely a bobcat 250. The crack is on the corner between tooth and side cutter. The crack Is approx 8" long and opened a 1/2" to nothing. It has been welded before, I don't know when who or what filler they used. Could I use stainless rod, or would It be too brittle. I know it will require several passes and much heat I just need some pointers.

Reply:Not possible at this time the machine is 3 hours away. it's a small crack we saw it early. I'm just not sure what electrode to use. I will grind off old filler and gouge the seam and build it up.
Reply:It is a rental machine so longevity is not too important. Although it needs to be strong for the next few months. It is cracked between the cutting edge and side panel.
Reply:I would say 7018 size depending on the thickness of the bucket. Was it the weld that cracked?1982 miller blue star 2E ac/dcHarbor freight flux core posVictor oa
Reply:If its a rental then the rental company should repair it1982 miller blue star 2E ac/dcHarbor freight flux core posVictor oa
Reply:Yes it is the weld that cracked. Rental companies charge way too much money. It's a simple repair I just want it to last. Thanks for the input.
Reply:The machine is being used to dig "weathered rock" it's not granite but not sand stone either. Once the rock is removed it will be used for pipe work and grading. More crane work than excavator work.
Reply:I would suggest the prep is more important then the rod size or even the type. You need to gouge the crack both sides pretty much until its all the way through. The crack is probably in the "clam shelled" area of the blade. Pretty common.  Depending on the size of the bucket those blades can be as thick as 2 inches. The best method is an air arc i use 1/4" makes quick work of it but need allot more amps than a bobcat can produce. 1/8 " will work with that machine though. Then its time to lay down some metal. Quickest and "Imo" best way is a dual shield but 7018 is fine if thats all you have access to. This was a pretty big bucket. 68" but gives you an idea.
Reply:I would be sure to disconnect batteries and ground as close to the crack as possible. I have never had a problem burning up electronics, but if something were to happen down the road the weldor always gets the blame.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches.
