This is going to be a bit long, so bear with me...So I'm looking to finish my welding education up (took a semester of stick and O/A welding at the beginning of last year). It was a lot of fun but I was rather pissed off because the instructor was rather absent (we would see him at the beginning of class, at the end of class, and he'd maybe walk through the booths once or twice during the 4 hr class session). Between the issues with the quality of instructors at tech colleges (it's a gamble...sometimes you'll get the great retired guys who've been doing it for 40 years and are awesome and sometimes you'll get what I got) and the time requirement (I do not have time to go through two years of classes with general education requirements thrown into the mix that many colleges seem to want for a full structural and pipe program as opposed to a structural welding certificate program) I am strongly considering attending Hobart based on it's reputation and time frame (9 months start to finish for the structural and pipe combo program. I've researched the threads here and Hobart seems to be very well regarded so they are a top consideration. Are there any other routes I can look at to get my welding career really off the ground? None of the shops here seem to want to hire an apprentice without the school experience so I'm striking out there. If I'm going to go to Hobart I'm going to need to find housing (I don't think living in my truck while the Ohio winter rages is going to work out) and I'm going to need to find a job to pay for my housing and bills. I'll have some savings built up (probably about 3k ish) to work with so there is at least that. Any info about the area and any possible contacts would be much appreciated.Hobart Stickmate LX235AC/160DCRanger 305GVictor 315 O/A rigHope to acquire in the next couple of years: Hypertherm PM45 and Dynasty 200DX
Reply:Call the school.  They can give advice for local apartments for rent.  The jobs thing is just a crapshoot.  There's some work in the local restaurants after hours.  You could try to find work during the days and take your classes on 2nd shift; but you'll be wiped out after 5 or 9 months of 16 hour days...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
