Reply:Cool project! Please show all pics as you go and include details. If you remember, I usually forget. I too like to go heavier duty whenever possible. 5/16" is plenty heavy, but in an abusive situation definitely agree. What did you use to cut it apart, oxy/fuel, plasma, carbon???"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:Before I went self employed I worked in a fab/job shop and we're in a rural area so lots of loader buckets from farms.  Did a lot of edge replacements but I built a lot of buckets too.  I had a pretty nice design figured out after awhile, we had a stack of quick attach plates we already made so when it was all said and done I could shear, brake, weld up, add an edge and backing plate by myself in an 8 hr day no problem.  It's been awhile since I did that so I don't remember the exact time but it was under a day.  That was for a skidloader bucket.  All mig the plate, then pre-heat and run the edge on with dual shield.
Reply:When you are preheating the edge prior to welding do you preheat a small section in the center of the bucket weld it and preheat and weld in small sections all the way out to the edges on both sides alternating from side to side or what is the proper procedure.Good Luck and Never Give UpAWS MemberLincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCHobart Beta Mig 251Hypertherm Powermax 45Lincoln WeldanPower D10 250 ProMilwaukee PortabandEllis BandsawMiller AEAD 200LE

Reply:Thanks admswelding. Did you use some special steel for the wear bars on the bottom of the bucket and did you weld the cutting edge all the way across on the bottom of the bucket as you did on the top. Also what kind of wire did you use for welding the cutting edge.Good Luck and Never Give UpAWS MemberLincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCHobart Beta Mig 251Hypertherm Powermax 45Lincoln WeldanPower D10 250 ProMilwaukee PortabandEllis BandsawMiller AEAD 200LE
Reply:I always laid a 2X4 tube along the edge of the bucket and clamped it with about 7 bessey clamps, then preheat the edge to about 400,  don't tack the edge on though, just clamp it.  Then start welding in the center and work your way out alternating sides. flip the bucket over and skip weld the back.   Normally let the edge underlap the bucket by 1/2 or 1/3 depending on the situation.  Just always used regular mild steep flatbar for skids underneath unless it was something really used hard, then might put strips of AR plate.
Reply:Adamswelding, what gas are you migging with? The wear strips ar regular hr steel. The cost of ar was not in the budget on this job.It will last them a good while anyhow. The wire i run is 70/S6 .035Dia.The gas is 75/25 mix. This is all being pushed thru my Millermatic 250X.The back/underside i just stich weld on bunch of 8"stiches

Reply:Its kinda hard to telll, but did you grind the paint back before you started?  Maybe thats some super tough paint, but I would have thought that your preheat would have at least discolored that yellow paint more than it did.Miller 250x & Lincoln V205-TSmith Oxy-Prop torch
