Three passes on a flared bevel

I'm working on the base for a large nameplate and found two large pieces I used as legs on an old welding table.......... 36" long, 1/4" thick.......It took a couple hours to weld out both sides......I chopped all the video down to about 8 minutes.......Something to watch during that first cup of coffee I guess......Here it is.......Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:That's gonna be one heavy nameplate! Nice stick welding. I don't think I've seen much stick welding before. Does it make the shop all smokey? Why not use your mig since it isn't a trailer it just has to look nice? Reply:Thanks Eliot....My MIG is just a 110v machine and would just cold lap the tube if I used it.... in fact... these were the legs to a welding table that I built with that little MIG.... and I was able to break it apart with a 4lb sledge when I built a new one......It does make the shop smokey, but I keep the fan on full blast to blow it away from me..... Reply:How big is this name going to be? Must be some REALLY LONG name. Are you going to add wheels to it to make it easier to move around, or just make a place to slip forks under it to lift it with a forklift?
Reply:Why 6010 for the first pass? Did you grind after the 6010 pass?
Reply:6010 on the first pass just for the practice mostly..... No grinding on the 6010........I did grind the top part to be smooth so that the letters will sit flat......... and have a smooth appearance on the finish.......18 feet of welding.... it was the most fun I had all weekend.........I'm aiming for 75 lbs on the finish product.........I'll be getting burnt orange paint mixed next week or the week after so I can start painting the finished product in December...... Reply:The welding looks great. I just broke my stick out for the first time in years. I got inspired reading on this site. Is there going to be any strength needed in the sign? Did you weld it up that solid for practice or because you wanted a good looking weld to show? Seems like overkill for a sign. Just curious, not critiquing.

Reply:Just cause im kinda anal, your head is too close, your rod angle is pushing and you should strike ahead of the arc, lift move to the crater and begin.I forgot how to change this.

Still a learning process.......My instructor tells me my tie ins need work........ Among other things..... He is absolutely right........Your anal observations are dead on accurate........ Reply:No inclusion problem that I know of......The rod angle I was aiming for was 90 degrees....... But as a student Who is having a blast leaning, I find that the video helps me see areas that need improvement outside of school.......
