Reply:Just remember, with CO2 use ER 70S-2 wire, for the extra deoxidizers. JGSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:My LWS is always fairly priced on MIG wire, I get a 33 pounder of .045 for like 35 bucks.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Originally Posted by SuperArcWell I've heard the same thing about the higher the number, the more or "better" cleaning deoxidizers are present.  I checked the latest edition of the "proceedure handbook of arc welding" by the Lincoln arc welding foundation.  Page 4.1-10 has the aws chemical composition requirement chart for GMAW with solid (S) wire. When comparing ER70S-2 with ER70S-6, it only shows that the "2" has some added titanium, zirconium and aluminum. Both classes of wire have Carbon, manganese and silicon.  However, the "6" class wire has almost double the amounts of C, Mn and Si as the "2" class wire.   The book doesn't explain the classification of deoxidizers too clearly.  One can see that out of the six classes of solid wire, (ER70-2, 3, 4, 5, 6, &7), the higher you go, the more amount of carbon, manganese and silicon is added. Now, couple the above info with Lincoln's "limited" info on their website comparing "3" vs "6", they state "6" has more deoxidizers than the "3" and for dirty rusty or heavier mill scale, the -6 class appears the best option.  (I know, they are not specifically comparing -2 vs -6.  But, it's all I could find here with an iPhone). :BSo, I can't find any manufacturer literature stating that ER70S-2 has MORE deoxidizers than -6 does. However, going up the scale (from -2 to -7), it appears that the higher the number, the more deoxidizers or "cleaning action" for welding on dirtier steel exists. Again, I'm not positive, but if you or anybody else has documentation showing that -2 is better for "dirty" mild steel than -6, I'd love to see it.  I looked and can't find otherwise. I have read both varying opinions on other forums where both sides of the argument claim their own viewpoint. I can't find a manufacturer's official published definitive answer.  So, I just don't know.

Reply:Originally Posted by SuperArcDan, thank you for posting that link.  It was very informative.  It basically said that ER70-S7 has the highest level of deoxidizers.  It's still confusing, because it appears every class of wire is suited for some type of specific alloy, or dirty/rusty steel.   The article never comes out and says which class is the best "deoxidizer solid wire."  I'm just more confuesd now......
