New to me rod oven

I picked up this 350#, Phoenix DryRod oven, off of CL for $150.00. The power cord had some insulation missing in spots and when I went to change it, the inside wiring looked bad so I replace it all. I pick up some high heat wire from the local electrical supply house for going down to the heating elements. Then I decided to make it look like the new Lincoln ovens. I wire wheeled the whole thing, painted it with a coat of high temp primer and then red and black. I've got four fire bricks I have to cut 1/2" off to stand them on their side and to help retain heat instead of opening more than one can of each size 7018."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Sweet deal!  Nice refurb job too.  Wish I could find myself a deal on one of those been looking for awhile.  Price on a new one is out of the question for me.  Buy it from ya for $200? (Just kidding).

I should have jumped on them, but I thought they would be too big. I really wanted a Keen 200#, but try to find a deal on one of those. Reply:Housedad -I wouldn't think it would really matter, for practice purposes, if the rods were not kept in an holding oven once the original container was opened.  I would think if you kept them dry and in the house in relatively low humidity and/or in a resealable container and only took a hand full or two outside to practice with at a time (and used them all), that they would be just fine for welding scrap, non-structural stuff and practice for quite some time.  As long as they do not get "too wet" (i.e. absorb too much moisture) they should weld well for practice purposes. That being said, for code work, structural welds, certified welds, etc. that's another matter entirely.  In these instances, you absolutely need to properly store, hold, recondition and/or discard low hydrogen rods as required by the specs.  In many facilities some one will make sure the welder complies if the welder doesn't himself.  If one doesn't the rod will no longer be low hydrogen and will defeat the purpose of using such a rod.  It can result in porosity and weld cracking. If you decide to get a holding oven to teacher her how to properly "hold" low hydrogen rods, please be aware that if she leaves rods exposed too long (according to Lincoln more than 4 hours for the non moisture resistant types and 9 hours for the moisture resistant types) your benchtop holding oven or portable holding oven isn't going to cut it with respect to keeping the rods properly.  If she does that and you want to teach her how to get the rods back to spec you'll have to get a reconditioning oven to get the electrodes to a higher temperature than that which most "holding" ovens are capable of.   They do sell ovens that are both reconditioning and holding ovens.  These however get expensive (and are big).  You can buy, use, practice with, and then discard a lot of unused 7018 rods for the price of such an oven.
