Has anyone ever welded a regular heat treated splitting wedge to the top of their wedge on their logsplitter to extend the height? Would 6013 or 7014 rod work for this, using a Hobart Stickmate AC/DC, Im a total rookie as far as welding, teaching myself by just doing it and getting all the info. I can from the forums..
Reply:Use 7018. Little pre-heat, and a slow cool down.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:thanks, thought about 7018 but 7014/6013 are what Ive got on hand, will pick up some 7018 next time Im in town.

Reply:With the proper weld area prep, preheat and cool down I would have no issue with 6013 or 7014. The choice between the two would be 7014 only because of the 70,000 psi vs. 60,000. But even if you have 7018 do some prep work before.... As far as the 6013/7014 vs. 7018 on splitters and trailers I have built them using both with no fails, my current splitter I bent/twisted the wedge but the 6013 welds are the same as new. I think most people use 7018 out being told nothing else will work, which if you used 7018 good on you.... I personally have no issue using either if used properly.. Correct me if I'm wrong, but every professional welder I've seen comment on the topic has always recommended 7018 (when stick welding) for things like trailers, log splitters or anything that takes an impact or sustained torsion stress bearing load.

Reply:If you make the wedge taller there's a chance you'll rip the original right off the splitter frame due to the extra leverage against it. Might work better to extend the wedge wings so it makes the wood split wider. Reply:Well got some 7018 rod and welded it on, had to grind out 1st pass as I think my amps were too low, 100 amps on DC, got a ton of spatter and weld had pin holes in it, ground it out and turn up to about 125 and it put down a nice smooth bead after that... only the 3rd thing Ive ever welded but seems to be on there good, took a 22 oz. framing hammer and hit it sideways 10-12 times as hard as I could and it didnt budge.. as far as it tearing original wedge off, the extension is only 2 in. so dont think it will put that much stress on the original at least I hope not.. thanks for all the help.

Reply:Hey CEP, I don't recall picking on you for a while... Could you explain which of these ESAB tests you referenced is the "smack it with a hammer" test? The AWS guide on electrode selection says 6013 has half the soundness and ductility of 7018...Does that automatically mean it's bad? Well....maybe that document won't help arguments for 6013...But I do think it'll weld a wood splitter wedge - those rams move too slow to act like a hammer Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Originally Posted by ANVILJohn I age with you and CEP's testing results. If 6013 was so great for a trailer or log splitter, what was the point in engineers working for ESAB, Hobart and Lincoln to design the 7018 to begin with? A 6013 "May" fail early on, but a 7018 probably won't. Why take a chance and use anything but 7018 for a log splitter? As far as I'm concerned, a 6013 is a "cosmetic" surface rod or sheet metal rod. It's about as good as a weld from a 110v wire feed system. Apparently, it's always been just "good 'nuff" for some. For hundreds of years and to this day in parts of China, a simple hole in the floor as a $hitter is just good enough too. SA or AK! where is that thread you're all talking about? I'd like to read it for "bathroom" study period. |
