Hey all.  Did an intro yesterday, but I'm tired of paying others to do my welding on the old Harleys that I build, and now that I picked up an old Jeep CJ project I REALLY need to do my own. I'm a beginner, so I would prefer MIG for what I'll be doing. Found a Lincoln 170T near me (230V), with a cart and a full bottle of 75/25 Argon/Co2. Guy will take $400 for the whole rig.My brother welds as a pipefitter and is talking me into the 230V setup since I have that in the garage already. Also talking me into the shielded gas regulator/setup for a better weld. We looked up the costs in a contractor's book and the bottle itself runs about $150.Thoughts on the rig or the price? I think I'm gonna pull the trigger and learn how to weld...
Reply:i realy dont know about the welder itself i think its a older model with less heat settings thin the 180. I myself just paid $570 for a hobart handler 187 which the handler 190 replaced but a great welder non the less. The newer welders have the removable mig gun and more heat settings thin this older tap style lincoln. I would realy think of hitting ebay first thats where i got my deal.
Reply:I have that same exact model. I paid about $600 a little more than 10 years ago. It is rock solid and not the Home Depot versions that are made in Mexico.I would recommend it if there are no issues. As far as an offer, it would be no more than half of original price. It does look like it had a hard life, so $200 to $250 is what I would say it is worth.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I think you would need a mig with infinite settings, not a tapped machine, a tapped machine would work, i just believe a tapped machine would be better for your usage range...I'm with shovelon though, I was thinking I wouldnt go over $300 if i would even buy the 170tI would recommend the thermal arc 181i, or 211i (when it comes out) they would be almost perfect for your situation, as they are mig/dc-tig/stick/spoolgun ready..Last edited by brucer; 05-17-2012 at 07:00 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Bro fitter is right, 230 volt for sure. Price seems high for a used machine. Pricing varies from city to city or state to state. Posting location would help. If money isn't to much of a issue, have work for a machine, maybe go new.    Like Brucer said about the Miller 211. Many say that 211 is the hot setup. Good luck.
Reply:Dang Brucer,That first statement really sounds like a Democrat explaining taxes.Should he or shouldn't he get a tapped machine?Only thing I can figure is that you don't know how to use either very well.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Buy good once and be done. If you build bikes and other stuff it's a tool for you, and not something you wanna try to see if you like it. Go new. Dodge, Chevy, Ford, same old debate. Brand name is your choice tho. Have your brother with you and see if your LWS will let you run a few brands, see what your bro thinks feels best if you have no experience. Me personaly i'm a Miller guy and would suggest looking into a millermatic 211 mvp 110/ 220 just my opinion tho. That lincoln would be an ok deal, but looks a little beat to me. Reply:if it had a bigger bottle then what i'm seeing from the pic and the machine runs good i might say give it a go. but you will wind up scrapping that little gas jug and going bigger on your 4th or 5th bottle ($$$) so you really can't figure the bottle in the deal.  if you can afford and choose to go new consider this. i have both the mm211 and the ta181i and although the 211 is a sweet dual voltage machine and you can't go wrong, i would pick the 181i for it's greater versatility for a small shop. for the cost diff between the 2 you could have the 181i with 2 125cf bottles, spool gun, tig torch and pedal for 3 processes for the cost of the 211+ 2 bottles+spool gun for 1 process.the 2 bottles for each is assuming you want the option of doing aluminum since you will have the spool gun or you just want to have a backup c25.if the 170 is in good shape hold up 3 Ben's and if he takes it great, if not .225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:It is not a bad price and like you said it is ready to go. Since the guy has the bottle does he also have the regulator?I'd offer $300.00 and then take it for $350.00Shovelon,the "T" model Lincolns were/are exactly the same as the machines that were/are sold at the box store. Had a conversation with Lincoln a while back about their tapped machines sold at the LWS compared to the box store machines.T Models were only sold at Welding shops along with 135 Plus and 175 Plus Models which were a better built machine and offered Continuous Voltage selection. The box stores all got their own badged machine Weld Pak 175 etc etc. so they wouldn't have to worry about Price matching. The Current T model specs:Superior Arc Performance – Forgiving arc and simple tapped voltage control make dialing in your application easy.Precise Wire Drive – Precision full adjustment drive system reduces chance of wire tangling and crushing."Box store 140:"Superior Arc Performance – Forgiving arc and simple tapped voltage control make dialing in your application easy.Precise Wire Drive – Precision full adjustment drive system reduces chance of wire tangling and crushing."the difference in the Powermig series C models is the addition of the Industrial Cast Aluminum Drive – Dual gear-driven drive rolls deliver positive traction.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
