Like the title says I need to figure out a symbol to engrave on my new forgine hammer I made out of s7 tooling steel. The hammer will be a 8-9lb small sledge for forging 1 inch and up material.  I'm already having my name engraved into the side but want something more to make it more noticealby I should say.  Just looking for suggestions, and I will be using CAD to draw the pic to run the program on the engraver.  Thanks guys cant wait to hear what you got to say
Reply:pics of the mer?...are you wanting to engrave a pic on the head of the hammer?Miller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
Reply:im engraving my name and a simple pic into the side of the hammer head
Reply:We love pics man! lets see your hammer     Serious tho!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:thats the only pics I have of it at the moment, I got it nice and polished the faces on it today and left it with my friend at work to get it surface grinded to ensure true flatness on the sides and top and bottom.
Reply:I cut the angles with a vertical band saw, and grinded the edges and after surface grinding I will have every corner, angle, flat surface polished.  then have the cnc engraver do some work on the side of the head
Reply:Good job, how about a anvil with your customized initals incorporated?I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:thats a good idea, I was kinda thinking of having my "saying" in a arch style so it would be   the words " JUNK WORKS" in a arch with the symbol for fire underneath it with my name under that. I cant make up my mind lol cause most people around here know me cause I right junkworks on almost everything I build so I guess if I had a name for my work that would be it lol
Reply:Your a talented kid bud, don't write" junk" on any of your projects. How about "BakerWerks".  I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:its a possibility, I got started with junk works when I first started welding cause that what I was always fixing peoples junk lol.  Just one of them things that stuck I guess lol
Reply:If your gonna hit stuff with it ( and get it banged up) why have it all machined up?Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:its gonna be hardened, and plus its S7 tooling steel.  Its not going to get beat up very easy at all, and plus all machine work was free! the glory of cool co workers
Reply:I just wanted to have a hammer to fit my exact needs thats why its on the heavier side of a handheld mini sledge
Reply:I'd think about some sort of hammer and anvil motif myself. There are all sorts of symbols and fonts from Lord of the Rings / the Hobbit that might also be appropriate.Out of curiosity are you going to punch/drift the head for the handle?[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQnzlK9YsL8&noredirect=1[/ame][ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmzsK_IQsfE[/ame]I can't find the good video I've seen of them punching out the opening on a  hammer  right now..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Maybe it's time to make yourself a touchmark to go with your new hammer.  Here's a video that shows how to make and use one.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoPCP7AtP94[/ame]
Reply:Heres the pics after machining and light polishing, its got a good shine on it.  I bought a hatchet handle for in and Im gonna cut the handle to make it the length I want it to be.  I thought about drifting the whole threw the center but I would have to make a custom drift  just for it cause the handles shape.  I will prob go ahead and mill the center out the next day I'm at work.
Reply:Interesting choice for a handle. I take it you don't plan to use the peen on the back much then. Somewhat defeats 1/2 the use of a forging hammer. I think that handle will feel very awkward if you try to use the peen.I learned about handle fit the hard way in my blacksmithing class. The handles on the ones they had really didn't fit my hand well at all, and I had a beautiful set of blisters by the end of the 1st day. Can't really say it was due to doing something different, since I swing any number of hammers on a very regular basis and the blisters showed I was clearly needing to use the wrong part of my hand to muscle the poor fitting handle. I ended up using the instructors hammer with a thinner handle to finish out day one. Day two saw me coming in a 1/2 hour late as I had to go pick up a new handle for a spare head I had. That plus a bit of work with the belt sander and orbital sander fit it very well to my hand..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Im cutting the handle from the bottom to take out the bottom bend. I will be able to use both sides of the handle without any trouble.   I sorry to hear bout your blister on your first day.  I usually dont end up with blisters unless I use a fiberglass handle, dunno why but wood usually never gives me blisters.
Reply:I would stamp or engrave in a USA logo, assuming that's where you are.  I will say that the face looks too flat."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:The face is not flat, it has a slight curve all the way across, pics just dont do justice
Reply:Blisters really weren't that bad once I stopped using the wrong parts of my hand on the hammer. I don't use fiberglass handles either. Most of my daily use hammers are all steel handled Estwings ( I tried my 3lb Estwing mallet in class, but it didn't have a peen on it and I wasn't that keen on the rubber handle and the heat.) My other hammers, ball peens and mallets are all wood.I'll be interested to see how you end up shaping this. I used a California framer one time and while it felt awkward at 1st, I could see how guys would like the power and control the hatchet handle offered. If I did more framing with a hammer I could see me getting one and giving it a try. My 28 and 30 oz Estwing framers are fairly similar in size and weight..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:No biggie Travis you could always tweak it, its only a starting point!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:very true, I cant wait to finish it up so I can beat the snot out of it lol.  It should weigh in right at 9 lbs with the hammer after final machining.
Reply:9lbs! You are going to have an arm the size of Arnold's thighs  to use that. I've got a shortened 10 lb sledge that we used to use to drive concrete pins in asphalt. I'd need both hands to swing it most times for any duration. My 4lb engineers sledge is more than enough for me to swing one handed for any length of time.On hammer weight, my instructor suggested lighter rather than heavier when we were looking at my selection of hammer heads and sledges I'd collected over the last year roughly. His comment was hammers heavier than about 2-3 lbs don't really allow most people the control they need when forging. Light well aimed blows were better than massive forceful ones. Even acting as a striker with a bigger hammer, you almost never raised the hammer over your shoulder. Small light taps with maybe a 4-6 lb long handled sledge. You never wound up like you were splitting wood..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reaganyes 9 lbs lol I built this hammer especially for drifting threw 2-3 inch solid steel and forging 1 inch steel down fast.  I use a wide variety of hammers but this one will be for the bigger stuff.  Right now ive been swinging a 10 pound sledge with the handle shortened so it will not be a big difference for me.  When you have a good hammer you let it and the anvil do the work for you, I don't really try to hit hard, I let the hammer do it for me lol
Reply:9 pounds..ouchLast edited by weldbead; 12-07-2012 at 06:55 PM.
Reply:I am 100% positive I get it hot enough I do alot of forging out of d2 and S7 tooling steel scraps which have good work hardening properties.  The head of the hammer was weighed when I first got the piece of S7 tooling steel and it weighed 12lbs.  I weighed it before I started and Im going to weigh the final product. Also when drifting a 2 3/4 inch whole throw a piece of 3x3 inch steel you want a big hammer unless you want to stand there all day
Reply:They make presses or power hammers for that. .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I dont have enough $ for a power hammer lol, I have a 50 ton iron worker press I can use at work but that takes all the fun out of it.  Its no fun till your arm feels like its going to fall off lol
Reply:well heres a suggestion. You're forging, it's a Hammer, I'd to "TB" in Runes. the runes are straight lines so it would be easy to make the touch mark.  Just me $0.02and yes, I might be a bit biased to the whole scandinavian lettering thing. but hey it works. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
