Cracked Frame

Hello All, A garage called me today and asked if I could weld a cacked frame on a late 90s early 00s Dodge Dakota pickup? I know the lady that drives it and by no way was it abused she uses it to deliver mail and daily driver. I have not seen it yet, just wondering if anyone has ever welded a frame on one of these?? Is it common for cracks in this model? Thanx Dale will post pix when I ck it out

Reply:Auto frames are one of those jobs:  If you need to ask, than you are not qualified to make the repair.  Period.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Google "ICAR truck frame repair". If you cannot perform a specifically approved repair I'd pass.

Reply:Frames are sketchy.  9 times out of 10 a crack = bent.  And bent = no good.  They'll cut the frame horns off or unbolt them at the firewall and replace with a straight frame.  I currently have a 1995 Suburban diesel in the driveway with a bad frame.  Its a nightmare.Miller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme

Reply:Frame swaps are not as horrible as they appear. I've worked on several (they are routine for used car lots building good vehicles out of multiple-vehicle auction buys).We rarely fix frames on late-model vehicles. Easier to find something with fire damage to the cab/engine bay and grab the frame off of it. Take lots of digital pics and tear down the organ donor first.
Reply:I didn't abuse my f 150 2000 model either but the frame cracked behind the rear axle and in front of the back spring hanger.  It was due to corrosion due to ice melting stuff on the road which would certianly exist for a mail delivery person.  I didn't see a location but this might be the case.  Has the crack been inspected by now?fran

Reply:Unless its just an easy bed mount or something non suspension related I would also pass even though it's your friend if it failed and killed someone you would be in court having to prove it wasn't your weld that caused the failure.......I have a Million Dollar coverage an I stay away from car stuff......Not worth the risk.....  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
