air regulator/filter

I got a new compressor a few weeks ago and have finally just about got it all wired up and ready to fire it up. Any recommendations on a regulator/filter unit like the kind that HF sells or is a regulator a regulator ?I was considering either this one:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=42035or this one:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=1118I picked those two because most of the other ones only do 125psi and my compressor says it will do 140psi.FYI ... this is the compressor I got:http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=prod...49-1126-DP4615I got that one primarily because I had gotten about $250 worth of gift cards to there for Christmas.
Reply:Jack;My friend 1911man bought a filter unit from HF. He returned two of them due to leaking. The third one leaked, and instead of making another trip to Tampa, I ended up Lapping the housing to get it even so the o-ring would seal. I would get the filter, regulater, and if your going to run air tools a lubricator from Home Depot. On my compressor, I installed connections so I could have straight filtered air at tank pressure, filter regulated air, and lubricated regulated air. I've had this set up for a couple of years with no problems. If I remember I paid about fifty bucks for the compreassor and tank, with a burned up motor. I bought a new motor, and it's given me good service. I did ultrasonic testing on the tank, and found no deterioration on the metal. When the compressor dies, I've got a "Saylor-Bell two stage air pump, that needs new bearings. It was leftover from a customer. I'll rebuild it and install it some day. I would get one of the ten buck HF auto tank drains (I know Franz doesn't like them) Replace the plactic tubing, and fittings that come with it with copper. I've had good luck with mine. Be careful those 60gallon vertical's are kind of top heavy.Here's a picture of my setupHF expert Jim  Attached Images
Reply:I just got the HF 1118 unit ($19.99 on sale) and I'm not completely happy with it....the moisture trap seems to work fine which is why I pulled my craftsman regulator (too much moisture gettin' thru) ....the HF regulator will not purge itself when you lower the air pressure you have to release the air pressure at the hose to lower the pressure, and it seems to climb about 10-12 lbs when you stop from what it is set at. I think I will be using my craftsman regulator on the HF moisture trap. If these problems don't seem to hinder what you will want out of it then get it. BTW my Craftsman regulator is like the first HF model on your list.
Reply:morpheus,The Motorguard units work well and you shouldn't have to re-work them like the HF units.  I didn't like the idea of running 125-175 psi through the quality of their stuff. Good luck,Michael
Reply:I'm running mostly ARO stuff that was picked up at a local industrial store.  Decent stuff that's cheap.  Definitely go the route with lot's of connections.  I can run filtered or unfiltered air at tank pressure and at 90 psi (or any  other regulated psi) I can run clean or dirty.
