I've got a newish secondhand Dynasty 200DX. It's got 1 hour and 24 minutes arc time and 217 arc starts, so it's pretty new. When I turn it on, it makes a godawful buzzing sound. Some of the settings from the previous owner were screwed up, so that I couldn't access pulser or sequence functions in DC mode without triggering HELP12. I factory reset it and those functions came back but the buzzing continued. I took the cover off and can't pinpoint the source, but if I had to guess I'd say smack bang in the middle of the power supply heatsink area in the center. It sounds like a leaf is caught in the PSU cooling fan blades but the fan isn't spinning. Is that a clue? Should the fan spin up when the unit is switched on or does it only kick in when load is applied?Another symptom is when you switch it off at the back, as you switch it it sounds like a bad contact/short is occurring. No other bad symptoms.Any clues what I should look for or how to troubleshoot further?
Reply:Sounds like normal inverter noise to me.
Reply:Actually, I just got off the phone with a tech rep and he said the same. I'm feeding it 430V and he suggested it was just Auto-line converting voltages internally. It was the intermittent nature of the buzzing that caused me concern. If I press certain buttons the buzzing alters slightly enough in response. I have had other (one Chinese, one Finnish quality) stick inverters in the 130A/140A range that don't make the same sound so that was why I thought it might be an issue. The stick inverters buzz, but quietly. The DX sounds almost like a morse code machine by comparison.
Reply:IIRC, pretty normal. My D200 made all sorts of Cyborg noises. When shut, it still purred for like 30 seconds. |
