Hey! My name is Christion Jones and i'm currently interested in welding.Im trying to figure out what college and institutes to get involved in and get a certificate. The reason why i'm going into welding so i can make money for investment, fast as possible.I went through the threads and I noticed someone mentioned an apprenticeship for welding? Does anyone have more info about this? Is their one I can take in ATL, GA.? Please reply and give me some advice and wisdom. Thank you!
Reply:Not sure what schools are available in Atlanta with any salt to their name. There's the Local 72 in Atlanta. Pipefitters, plumbers, etc. that would be a great apprenticeship opportunity if you want to go Union. They actually took a bunch of new grads from the school I went to a few weeks ago. Look up UA Local 72 and give them a call. Ask when their apprenticeship starts and how you can apply. You usually have to stop in the Hall, pick up and application and fill it out there. Bring official copies (or the original for them to copy) of your Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, and High School Transcripts. These usually have to be sealed copies but some Halls will take opened copies. You will probably have a short "interview" with the TC where they will ask things like why you want to join the Union, your work experience, particular skills, etc. Don't worry if you have no experience, it won't necessarily disqualify you. If you've served in the military or have gone through a trade school it will push you to the top of the pile, however. Look up the Boilermakers and Ironworkers (if you don't mind heights) as well. Ask them the same things. If all else fails there's usually a Sheet Metal Workers union somewhere If that doesn't work out and you have the means to finance an education (or willing to take on student loan debt) find a tech school or community college that will teach you as much as you can learn. There are lots of different types of welding. Figure out what you want to do and find something to get you there.

Reply:I'm with these last two guys!  Those welders that are making good money, at least by the standards of their area, are still not living up-town.  And those guys that you hear about making big money pipe-lining have nearly $100,000 tied up in their trucks/welders/tools/etc.  Not to mention years of experience and the credentials to boot.  Maybe you should look into something else.Matthew MortonTexas A&M '06Logsdon Seminary '13"Who Dares Wins""AFTF""WH2PH"SA 200 (Code: 5337)TB 302CP 302 w/22A Wire FeederMillerMatic 200Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 252BurnTables 4x4 CNC MachineHypertherm 65
Reply:You want to learn welding to make investments???   Methinks you should look at becoming a stockbroker instead.  You won't make fast money or lots of it starting out in welding.
