Hi everyone,I have an old obsolete Smith combo torch.  I got it with a bunch of cutting tips so had the torch gone over by a torch repair place and use it regularly.  One of the tips has a dent in the seating face and I was wondering if it could be filled in with some material so that it seats tight again.  As it is now, it leaks acetylene. For example could I put some solder or silver solder in the dip and smooth it down?  Any thoughts on this?  I hate to throw the tip out as these are not readily available anymore. Thanks,Tony Attached Images
Reply:Silver solder should do a good job. The machine work must be pretty accurate.  Mac
Reply:You can get new multi-use tips and adapters.http://www.atlweldingsupply.com/Cutt...ors_c_473.htmlI use these and they work fine.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=49243
Reply:Hi again, how about if after I fill it in with some silver solder I file it down using a fingernail emery board to rough it down and then put it in my drill press and use a fine file or a fine emery board again to finish it off?  I don't have access to a lathe.  The idea of getting those conversion tips I'm sure will work but then I have to put money into the torch which I don't want to do unless necessary.  The damaged tip is like a number 4 or 5, a little large for average cutting needs so I just wanted to rescue the tip as opposed to investing in a new one.  Its good to know about that resource though, thanks.TonyLast edited by therrera; 06-11-2012 at 04:20 AM.Reason: to add more info
Reply:I just looked at the link provided by farmall and they only show the newer generation tips and not the type for my torch.  My tip is numbered 3-c1 and screws into the torch head as opposed to being a press fit, sealing on the seals and tightened with the nut. Attached Images

Reply:The other way to look at it is, it is junk now.  You might get lucky trying to free hand fudge it, or you might throw it out anyway.Bruce DeLaetHeavy Equipment Mechanic and Welder1948 SA-200 short hood1949 LincWelder 1801963 SA-200 red faceMiller S-32-P
Reply:Give ATL a telephone call. Phone number at top right of page:http://www.atlweldingsupply.com/They are helpful folks. I got the tip in my pics which is what you want from them.If all ATL had was a surplus load of adapters and can't order more, check out "top right, third item down" and give these folks a call:http://www.americantorchtip.com/cata...smID=XMUMU1200Last edited by farmall; 06-11-2012 at 09:41 AM.
Reply:You *might* be able to do it without a lathe.  I'd try using machinist blue and repeatedly try-fit it to your torch.  Slowly remove the high spots until the blue indicates a good fit.  You'll probably have a few hours invested to do it right.  You'll have to decide if it's worthwhile.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:I agree with Farmall, the American Torch Tip setup is the bees knees.Buy one "adapter" and whatever tips you want and you are good to go.
Reply:Ah, good ole' LC tips.  I still have a few of those new in their boxes, probably pre-World War II.

Reply:Too bad you hadn't posted this a week ago. We used to have that setup at work when I first started there 20+ years ago and accumulated a handfull of tip over the years. They got rid of them awhile ago so I turfed the tips when I cleaned my toolbox out (every 10 years needed or not) , you coulda had 'em for shipping. As for repairing yours, soft solder and dress them up with a file......Mike
Reply:Hi all, thanks for the feedback.  The consensus seems to be that it will work to fill in the dent and carefully take the material off.  As far as being worth it, in between jobs or when I don't have any work going on I usually do maintenance or modifications to my equipment.  I have a few of these projects going on at any given moment.Because sometimes tips get real hot (got enough to melt soft solder), I was thinking that maybe silver solder might be better than lead solder for this type of fix.I'll have a go at it.  I don't think it will take a few hours of trial and error to get the right fit.  As far as buying the adapters, it seems that for just one tip that is damaged, its not worth it as I have a dozen of them.  The damaged one is one of the few larger size tips and is why I would like to salvage it.Thanks,Tony
