band saw modifications

Ok, I know somewhere I saw a list of modifications everyone recommends on teh HF $169 specials.  Does anyone know where the list is or care to share the info?I have up to $500 to spend on the horizontal/vertical, so I'm trying to figure out if the HF cheapo would be good or if I should be fixin my sites higher.

Reply:Hf has the band saw on sale now for a hundred and fifty bucks.I use mine quite a lot. I got ideas from the Frugal machinist. Although I think a coolant system for that little saw is more trouble than its worth. If you use the right speed, and more important, the right pitch blade. The saw cuts flawlessly. The most important modification is to get rid of the "heavy duty" stand and fabricate a sturdy one. I use a spanner wrench on the blade tension knob to get enough tension on the blade. Yahoo even has a group dedicated to 4X6 bandsaws.As far as blades go I bought a roll of Starrett 14 tpi Blade and make my own. do a search for bandsaws, and bandsaw blades and you'll find a lot of posts.HF expert Jim Attached ImagesLast edited by fla jim; 03-14-2004 at 05:48 AM.

Reply:fla jim, I'm surprised that since you used that color, you didn't paint in "in memory of rock" or just lightly overspray the blue  Now I just gotta find a cheap source for castors.  My Sears hardware don't sell them anymore.

Reply:Thanks.  Just ran out today and got my saw. $150.They were out of castors though.  Guess that's no biggie since they don't sell locking ones and I need mine to lock since my work area isn't exactly level - don't ask.
