Different size fillet welds on same material thickness?

I got a new customer who is having me weld some of their products in their shop. I guess they figured it was cheaper to contract the work out than hire a part time welder. I will be using their equipment (Miller CP-302). However, some of their prints call out for 1/4" fillet welds on ALL joints. But some of the joints are welding 5/8" thick plate to 3/8" thick angle. I guess my question is that I've always been taught that the fillet should have legs equal in length to the base material. Can you make a smaller weld that will still provide adequate penetration on metal that thick? If not, I would prefer to clear things up with him beforehand rather than show him afterwards that I couldn't follow his print. The welds aren't doing anything super critical. The max load will be 1,300lbs over a 72" square. Reply:Go by what the print says...That way you can't be wrong....Trust me on this.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Same philosophy I have at work. The spec sheet doesnt lie, and you cannot get in trouble for following an approved and documented set of "blueprints"If it fails, and you did your welds correctly, then its on whoever designed the unit.
