Hi all have any of you built a stainless steel eagle?Sure would like to try to build something like this.any info on how to start such a project would be great.
Reply:No one has built one?do you think such a project would be cool?Or just way to hard?I would like to now how to build the feathers that would be a start.any info would be great thanks.
Reply:I made a sculpture of a Southwest Mesa scene in mild steel and copper for accents.  It was fun and I just used Ox Act to stick it together.  I used a Harbor Freight roller to make my sweeps and then hammered copper sheet for sunny sides of the Mesa accents.  I think it turned out pretty good for a first attempt, and it was fun.  I found something I liked in a painting online and plagerized it, changed it around to suit my particular liking and in different materials.I've seen things like this in copper.  Animals (lion, birds, ect.) and scenery with barns and stuff.  Lots of indian stuuf.  I would suggest that whtaever you do, start your first with copper and solder it.  It's much easier to work with and more forgiving than stainless.  If you llike sculpture, then try it in stainless.  Feathers are easy if you make them in mass quantity and tack them together to get you r shape/form.  Also, copper can be "colored" using different temps of heat, and if left unfinshed, takes on a natural greenish patina in time form natural oxidation.  They sell some oxidizers that can speed up the process in craft store like Micheal's (in CA).Good luck!Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Here's a pic of the steel eagle I'm working on.
Reply:Hey swells that looks cool.nice job how long did it take you to build it?
Reply:Thanks Rob, at this point I probably have 60-80 hours into it. It's nowhere's near completed, I still have to fill in the back half of the body and build more feathers than I want to think of. I started it by bending 1/4 inch rod to get the outline then filling it in with steel. I have a post "my metal eagle project" if you want to keep up to date on it's progress.
Reply:Nice work man....Looks awesome. Hey your shop looks like mine, flames all over everything!!!! I like the flamed out vise..LOLMiller blue star 2eLincoln 175

Reply:Thanks Fun4now, the post is titled "My metal eagle project", in the Welding Projects and Pictures section. I have no idea what I'll do with it when it's finished...just something I wanted to build. Wifey says it's too big to put in the house. I've toyed with the idea of selling it but I doubt anyone will pay enough to make it worth my while. Spent some time on it this weekend, I now have 13 large feathers per wing. I'll post some new pics soon.

Reply:neat site. I wonder how much the metal alone costs to make something that huge! You have to be kind of determined to make something that big and hope to sell it after the fact!
Reply:I can fab some stuff, but when it comes to this type of work, I haven't even a clue where to begin. Good work guysHTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.

Reply:The sculptures themselves are really well done, but the stands he makes for them kind of detracts a bit for me.  You have this nice organic, curved dragon and then you just plop it on a simple rectangular frame painted black with some casters.  Considering the asking price it would be cool to see some curves or undulations in the frame to reduce the visual disconnect.  You know, make the frame a part of the art as well.Miller Dynasty 200 DXBuildPro TMA52238 (38" x 22")Miller MP-10 & Jackson Nexgen EQC20 Ton Press & Swag HD Press Brake
Reply:the stands are temporary because he hasn't sold them yet.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiXCZZrSTZ8[/ame]the dragon weighs 9000 and in his damage video says it is made out of 16 gauge 304 stainless, so for those of you that use 304ss, how much would that cost? just curious!
