Let me know what you think and any suggestions.  approx 16ga Aluminum, Lincoln V205T, 80 amp w/pedal, Frequency 100, Balance 60% 1/16 Lanthanated  crayon grind tip with 1/16 filler except for the reall huge beads I tried 3/32. Ignore the Pile, that was just some of the practice stuff and took ages to figure out all the machine settings.  Of course it switched itself over to Panel and the pedal was acting as a trigger not controlling amps..  After I got that right it seemed a lot better. The numbers are just to make comments easier not in order they were welded.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Off all of those shown, #1 middle bead shows the most promise. Other than the small cold spot maybe 3/4" to 1" from the start it looks pretty good overall, especially for what is fairly thin alum for a person learning AC tig. Your consistency could use a bit of work on that bead, especially with adding filler, but other than that it would get you thru that basic stage at the tech school if you can do that repeatedly over and over. The other beads on #1 are fair at best, and in general show a need for more heat control and more consistency with adding filler. The other ones either look too cold or too hot overall and you generally need to add filler more frequently than you are, and really don't merit much comment other than you need more hood time compared to those on #1..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The middle in # 2 looks the best..Shoot for that everytime..Try to make the next dip just like the one before it providing it is good to begin with.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks guys,  that is exactly what I wanted to know,  I was varying the travel speed and heat etc.  Needed to know which one(s) were on the right track. I know what i did different in the #1 middle so I can practice for that more.   I do need to practice feeding the filler.  My right hand has no coordination at all.  I all don't have a real steady hand but just keeping at it.   As you can tell I hit the tungsten with the filler on that one..  Ok Off to practice more...Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Interesting you like the middle of #2 vs the middle one on #1 Zap. To me the 1st 1/3 looks a bit too cold, the last 1/3 a bit too hot and the dips could have been a bit tighter, but then I'm somewhat of a perfectionist on these things compared to what the tech school teacher accepts. The 2nd pict makes your choice look better than the 1st pict does, while it's the exact opposite on #1 where the 1st pict makes the bead look better than the 2nd pict does..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Did a few more and now have another question..  Bead profile, should it be slightly Convex, flat or slightly Concave???  Which seems to be dependent of the amount of heat right?Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:On flat stuff slightly "Bubbled Up"..On a "T" the sides should smoothly blend together with even dips..SLIGHTLY concave..Some may want to agree to disagree but it works for me.The heat should stay the "Same" even though as you go along you need less and less pedal.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:generally I believe they should be slightly convex when using just the right amount of heat on flat and butt joints.  If you give it enough heat that they end up flat-ish, by the time you get to the end of the piece, the aluminum will tend to melt way too easily.
Reply:Doug I think alot of this depends on the angle you look at..Some look good one way but eh the other way.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Cool, I was thinking they were supposed to be a little convex but wanted to double check before spending hours practicing the wrong way...Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Ok. Here are some more practice welds...   I am curious if this were an actual project, would u stop and let the coupon cool before completing the full weld.  I had problems with it getting too hot at the last inch or so. Welding left to right of course.    It was good practice for heat/pedal manipulation though.   The last couple pics I decided to try some 1/4" plate. Top bead was 1/8 filler rest is 3/32 filler and 3/32 lan tungsten.  Machine set too 180 amps but as I did concecutive beads, I was probably at half pedal once the puddle started....So critique away.    I am learning a lot from your feedback.    starts and stops will be my next thing to work on.  Question on lap joints.  Is the top plate supposed to keyhole a bit then get filled in with filler rod? Reply:Not too bad at all for starting out.Are you comfortable advancing the rod through your fingers as you are welding? That combined with foot control will help you a lot.Keep practicing, you are doing well.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Hey Southpaw... as for your bead pictures, it would be helpful to the others if you shoot from a 45 degree angle as well as straight on. The angle will give the pic some depth and allow the folks to see the bead height profile a bit easier.Regards,Papaalso a southpawLincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175

Reply:I'd agree your last set of welds is a big improvement over those previously shown. At the tech school several of those would get you close to moving on to joints. You just need to get a few to look the same all the way across. Most still show a few hiccups or you loose control at some point. You might think about getting ready to move on to flat laps soon. The good news is that you are progressing. The bad news is at this point things start to get expensive fast. Small pieces of alum heat up much faster, thus require more skill with heat control than larger pieces. Larger pieces usually means more "waste" that's not usable when doing joints. You'd be amazed at how much 6" long alum some one can go thru in just 1 hr of practice even trying to "conserve" material as much as possible. It wouldn't surprise me if on average a student doesn't go thru a 20' length of 3" wide alum in an hours practice. Somewhere I thought I remembered you mentioning getting a plasma to cut you alum practice pieces. Note that plasma cut edges are NOT weld ready. You will have a lot of prep to do on hand cut plasma edges. A band saw would be a better choice if available. We cut up some of the alum pieces for reuse with the plasma, but often the kids just blast the plasma dross all over the pieces and then clean up and prep is a nightmare..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Laying down beads on flat metal is probably something you won't ever need to do, so set up some test coupons that will let you practice with actual joint welding you will encounter assembling a part......A joint  L     or   Piece of tube  O  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:Beads looking good man.  Try to ease off the pedal and swirl the arc while dipping rod at the end to avoid those craters.  Get some tranquilizers ready for actual welding.  Its a whole notha ball game.  I can run great beds on flat plate at this point, when I try to actually stick 2 pieces of tubing together with nowhere to lean my torch hand, im all over the place with horrible beads.   I truly believe that tig, especially Aluminum, is an overlooked art.  You can't appreciate the skill needed until you try it yourself.  My buddy came over this weekend with a T bucket he bought from a welder.  I stood looking at the custom aluminum radiator beads for an hour.  I kept saying "Do you guys realize how hard this is to do?".  They said they were nice, but didn't get it.  Jodi at wtt.com makes everything look easy.  The sign of a true artist.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
