Die Grinders

I am looking at getting a die grinder and I want to know if it is better to get an angle or straight grinder. Also is  there anything else to look for on one?
Reply:I have several air die grinders.  I have both straight and angle.  They are great when the need arises.  Mine will accept both 1/4 and 1/8 collets.  I Got them from HF and only one of them is of questionable quality.  One thing to look for is the the design of the control valve.  On the bad one I have, it's kind-of puny and leaks air.  On the others, it's a much stronger brass or copper colored valve.  I use grinding stones, rotary files, cutoff wheels, drum sanders, wire brushes of all sizes.  I have one electric one, but with my compressor, I like the control of the air die grinders.  Also when I use them incorrectly and I stall them, it's not a big deal.  They also run cool and in fact, so cool I have to usually wear a glove, which should be done anyway.  Hope this is some of the information you where looking for.

Reply:I have a straight one and an angled one, I use the straight one 99% of the time. NOt sure how the high dollar name brand ones are any better than the cheapo ones from Home Depot, etc ... i got mine from Wal-mart about 7-8 years ago and before I had a wide selection of cutting tools I used the thing like crazy. I paid like $15.99 for it and it's still going strong ...

Reply:Yup, that looks like the Husky, probably made by the same people.  Pick it up and weigh it against a cheapo CH, way heavier.  Very powerful.  I paid about 30$ for one like that.  For running wire wheels I like the HF or Northern tool 4" angle grinders, 60$ and very durable,,, but they do gobble the air.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:I have two from Harbor Freight that I bought on sale for $9.99.  They are regularly $13.99 (ITEM 52847-7VGA.  They have a 1/4" collet and work great.  Two years...no leaks no problems. Attached Images

Reply:Well I bought one. I know it is not the best but it is my first one. It is a campbell hausfeld $19.00. I can't complain the only thing I don't like is its full speed or nothing. Attached Images

Reply:Cheap die grinders are definitely the way to go, and if you really need speed control, just add one of the $3- flow control valves on the back end.Only problem I've ever had with them is their tendency to unscrew themselves when you're running the hell out of one for a while.About the only feature I see on the expensive units is rear exhaust, and that might be a good thing if you're using the grinder to clean up aluminum with a carbide burr, so you aren't contaminating the weld zone with oil from the tool exhaust.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Dman, that first one you show is twice the grinder the CH is. Like Franz just said, I havnt seen one like that unscrew.  Pick up that Lowes unit, bet it weighs twice as much, way more power too.  The one like I got from HD you can feather the speed.  Rotary files are one of the big thing we run with them as well as wire brushes, pencil type.  I probably have about 20 air grinders.  I like electric for running 4 1/2 grinding wheels though.  BTW Dman, I stayed in Charlotte for a while, right down by the river in a little block house. Reply:I have a Craftman 1/4" electric one that I have had for years. I have a couple of air ones but I can't see running a 3 hp motor to run a little grinder.
Reply:i have a CH angle one, it leaks air around the fitting. it also says 18000 rpm, maybe when i fix the air leak that will be closer to true...StangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Joey
Reply:When I run my die grinders and cutoff wheels I run out of air too fast using my Craftsman 6HP 30gal compressor. What has been your experience as to how small of compressor will keep up with sanders, grinders and cutters?My die grinder is Ingersall Rand, my cutoff wheel is Craftsman and my DA sander is Husky.MM175Lincoln AC225 Tombstone
Reply:I have a 60 gallon 5hp and I don't use it in long periods, but it seems to keep up.
