This past weekend I was with a friend I see only every so often and the subject of pipeline work came up as it is tied to both of our businesses.  We got to talking about the work inspectors do.  As often happens, it got me to wondering.Do inspectors have to have years of welding experience or is it kind of split-track career paths.  I have taken only my first class but intend to continue.  Here is the thing, I have a good gig now in landman work in the oil and gas industry but want to add to my skills.  My thought is if I know the courthouse and legal end and know how to inspect, that is a rare skill set.  Might be rare because there is little use for both, or might be valuable, who knows. He said what he knows is guys have a 4x4 or quad and take their tool and inspect all day up and down the pipeline.  You have to work in remote areas.  I can handle all of that.  I can take the inspection class after IIRC 2 more welding classes.  I can get an Associates in Welding with not many more classes as I took my gen ed as part of my BS years ago.  IOW, I can get the schooling without a lot of problem. But when you hit the field, do they require you have a few years under your belt welding pipe, or do they actually prefer people who inspect only?
