At my mini-farm I need multiple gates for goats and sheep. Most are 4' wide (pastures) but some are much smaller (like stall gates). The 4' ones cost $100 but I think I can do better if I buy 16' feedlot panels for $60 and cut them into 4' sections ($15) and then weld them onto a frame. So what's the easiest way to make a frame for them? I don't have access to a pipe bender although I do have a rebar bender. What about bending rebar into a frame? Would that provide a passable stall gate? If doing rebar I wouldn't have to make them self-supporting as they could rest on the concrete floor.Or would you recommend a different method of quickly generating a frame? Need 4 pasture gates and 8 stall gates. Oh, and to make things really interesting I only have a stick welder.
Reply:How thick is the metal that you would be welding to the rebar? If its over 1/16th you should not have a problem with straight rod. Mac
Reply:I would consider using square tubing. If you are going to cannibalize your 16' panels, and my guess is that the panels are made from a heavy gauge wire, or a galvanized 1/4" round bar, then square tubing would give your gates rigidity, and it is very easy to work with. A chop saw, or even an angle grinder or circular saw with a thermal cutting blade and your stick welder would be all you would need. Around here, 1" square tubing is used so often, that it is easy to find good deals on stuff that has been left outside, or just material that has been over ordered. A few weeks ago, I picked up a bunch of 1"x1" x .114 x 20' for $5, that's $.25/foot, and would be good for what you are doing.Check out my channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkz...bZg8AYNXGqBjZQ"Both oligarch and tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of arms." - Aristotle
Reply:And a Pensacola tubing bender to do the corners http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=77691
Reply:Make the frames out of 1 1/2 black pipe using weld elbows, infill with your rebar. It is all easy to stick weld, cheap, and strong
Reply:Do you have access to any free or used metal ?? I made my hog gates with square tube for uprights and pipe for the horizontals. For hinges I used 3/4'' pipe with 3/4'' pins, worked well and easy. |
