has anyone ever done this? I am sick of using my bender mounted to the reciever hitch of my truck and I cant mount it in concrete because I rent. So has anyone ever used a air ram instead of an expensive hydro setup? If so tell me all about it.
Reply:Interesting idea.  If you were to try it I would use clippard rams.www.clippard.comMy plans for when i buy a bender, is to build a base that will attach to a tractors 3 point and run a hydraulic ram that way.
Reply:thats a good site thanks.
Reply:Ok this site seems to have whatever I may possible need. Only problem is aside from the stroke length Im not really sure what I need cause I dont know all the hydro lingo. So can someone give me a hydro for dummies site.
Reply:I don't think you'd have near enough control using air cylinders as air is far to compressible, compared to say hydraulic cylinders that can stop at precisely the location you want. You might be able to hook up a second power steering pump to the truck or something and run lines back. Make a quick tensioner for the belt and just remove it when not in use.
Reply:Work accomplished with a cylinder is based on pressure X sqaure inches of area of the piston.A standard hydrolic pump is normally set at about 1800 pounds per square inch. With a air supply of 125#PSI you would need about 1500% more surface area than a hydrolic cylinder
Reply:I see no reason at all that your current truck power steering pump might not be able to power a ram that could operate a bender.  Other than resovoir capacity, there is certainly pressure and flow enough to power a ram of this type.  One would simply have to install a remote resovoir to have enough fluid capacity to stroke the ram.  Some ram choices that might work as well are those found on snow plow lifts.  They have about the right length and capacity to operate a bender and I know of one person that has already adapted one of these rams on a bender that handles 2" x .250 DOM with a seperate pump system (not power steering).  The power steering pumps are being used by one major manufacturer of truck winches to operate a hydraulic winch and the off-road commnity uses the standard Chevy pumps to power a hydraulic "rock ram" steering system for handling large tires in tough situations.Hey! Bring the camera...Is it still hot?   $%#^%^#  Guess so...
Reply:your idea of air hydralic is not practible unless you fit an adjustable stop at the end of the ram stroke so as to have control over the angle of bend required.(meaning that the anchoring end can be moved so that at the end of the stroke you have the required angle of bend. i,ve done this with an oil hydralic bender because we have had to do a few thousand bends at exactly the same angle.MACCAi,m an illiterate old fella from the school of hard knock,s. have had a degree of success at inventing various machines.
Reply:If i buy the degree ring for my bender it has a stop
Reply:I talked to a guy that had an air operated bender and he said it worked ok but was very slow. He wanted to cheange it over to hydraulic. DavidDavid
Reply:Hydro is expensive. Im not to worried about the speed, im sure it will be faster then cranking it by hand. I dont even mind cranking it i just like the ease of mounting it if it is self powered.
