On one of my other favorite forums (second fav of course) there was talk of making a tig using a car alternator....Myth or fact...???
Reply:Yes it can, I have never done so I don't know the particulars. But a neighbor of mine did it and used it to stick weld with. Not a great arc quality and he was only using an 80 amp alternator. In theory an alternator is a CC power supply. Let us know if you have try and how it works out!Ron ShopFloorTalk Millermatic 350P, M-25, M-40 gunsDynasty 300DX, Coolmate 3, Crafter CS-310 TorchTrailblazer 302, 12RC, WC-2430A spoolgunSpectrum 2050Thermal Arc Plasma Welder PS-3000/WC-100B

Reply:Lots of guys out there in the 4x4 world running welders off of batteries and alternators. It takes around a 100 amp alternator and a kit (terminals, guage, etc) to make a pretty decent trail welder that is capable of welding stick at a pretty decent rate.Check here: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...t=board+welderhttp://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/on-boardwelder/index.htmlhttp://www.transpo.de/support/bulletin/bl99037.htmlhttp://www.trailhed.com/welding.htmlhttp://www.rivervalleyswamprats.org/...ardwelder.htmlHey!
