Hi guys,I've been practicing on some 6" sced 40 with stainless the past 2 days.. The test requirements call for no bigger than a 1/8th gap. I'm used to 5/32 gap and feeding the wire through the bevel. The test I will be taking once they feel I'm good enough will be sent off to x-ray. I've been trying 1/8th Tungsten 1/8th gap 1/8th wire and 5* cup around 84amps( Should I go higher). The root is no more than flush but looks like both walls are broken down somewhat. With x-ray is it okay to use the DIP technique (creating a keyhole and dipping the wire inside for a more wedding ring look? Also I'm purging around 10 in the pipe and 10 at the torch.
Reply:What is your setup on the bevel ? Are your bevel goes to nothing or they have a flat? Try to feather the bevel to nothing and put no gap between pipe. First pass fusion then fill with 1/8 or 3/32. Be sur your fusion is enough hot to pass trough. This way it will be easier to be flush inside.Have a good day.
Reply:I prefer smaller filler myself.I'm a fan of 1/16" filler because it creates a more fluid puddle. If you keep your land to a minimum you can keep a fairly tight gap with stainless.
Reply:try a 3/32 tungie(1/16 will do very well also), 1/16 filler.. and purge 10l/m is way too much if you pay for the gas, make sure there's no t too much pressure in the pipe.keep filler under argon at all times anyways x-ray is more about tungsten inclusion, porosity and end craters... if you pass visual don't be scared about x-ray--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:Tack it with a 3/16" gap and use a 1/8" tungsten and a 1/8" filler wire, put two tacks one at the bottom one at the top, back feed the wire off the bottom and sides that will put a nice wedding band in ever time.

Reply:tungsten does'nt give you undercut. not knowing what your  doing gives you undercut!don't  be mad cause i can be mad cause you can't!

Reply:WPS says 3/32-1/8th gap..I've been using a 1/8th wire bent in half to set the gap but with this stainless it sure does pull it below a 3/32 in some spots. I switch fillers but keep the same amps around 84-86. In some spots I have to key hole with the 3/32 since it wont squeeze through. Just wish when I set the gap it all stays the same around ha

Reply:I run 3/32 when 1/8th won't fit. In some spots 3/32 won't even fit in the bevel so I just keyhole.  I use a bent 1/8th rod or a y shaped rod to set my gap. Any other ways to set the gap to a loose 1/8th inch with it pulling so much with stainless.

Reply:I was going to use my 5/32 gap wire but the boss man came over and said hey you can't use a 5/32 gap it's gotta be 1/8th and no bigger like here on the WPS sheet so I've just been using a 1/8th rod to gap. I will try to bend the 1/8th rod up in some areas so it'll get loose. Whenever I weld in my first tack the other side of the pipe is already over 5/32 anyways but the sides closest to my first tack are shrinked up
Reply:At showdog75,good for you but I doubt it. At joemayo, when you go to feather out your tacks, you can open her up a little bit with a NEW CLEAN 3/32" grinding wheel. That may allow you to get that wire in there easier. Good luck bud
Reply:My vote is for 1/8 tungsten on 6" sch. 40. I must confess my lack of experience though, I've never been a muffler welder. For christ's sake just put a good gap in it weld it then tell the paper pushers what they want to hear.
Reply:Think I got it figured out besides sometimes on the bottom if gap is tighter than 1/8th.. Tack it up so small gap is on top larger on bottom. Use 3/32 up top around 77amps. 1/8th wire on bottom if it will fit and around 90amps. It usually gets way to tight for even 1/8th wire on the bottom so I go back to keyhole again. Should I just drop down to 3/32 wire and freehand on the bottom? I've tried jamming that 1/8th wire in the bevel pushing towards the pudde but always tend to slip and coldwire it.
